From the Principal
What a year 2019 has been for our school community and students, so many memories and achievements along the way that have seen our students grow from an academic and personal perspective. It only felt like yesterday that we were welcoming in a new school year and now we are at the end. A big thank you to all the Early Years families that have made me feel welcome this year. I have loved every minute of getting to know our Early Years students and families in 2019.
A massive congratulations to our Multiple Intelligence awards winners at our whole-school assembly which was held today. It is great that we are able to celebrate the different learning styles of our students while also celebrating and coming together to congratulate our 2020 school leaders. These students are a wonderful reflection of their families and should be proud to take our school into new and exciting adventures.
Planning for 2020 has been in full swing across the back end of the year with a number of new programs already set up to support students and families. We are lucky to be involved with the Austin Health CASEA program which will be partnering our school in 2020 on the Early Years Campus. CASEA has been developed to help children understand and express emotions, and to be better at problem solving and getting along with others. Development of these skills has been shown to enhance student capacity to achieve academically. The CASEA team will be working at the school and classroom levels, as well as at the small group level. The program is free for our families to participate in. The small group part of the program has been designed for children in Grade 1 to Grade 3. Parents from these year levels will be asked to complete a short questionnaire early in 2020 that will help us identify families who might benefit from the program. Invitations to participate in the group programs will follow. We are looking forward to our partnership with CASEA in 2020.
Preparations continue to be in full swing for the introduction of Year 5 and Year 10 on our Primary and Secondary Campuses respectively with moving of furniture and resources to start the year continuing. Please be patient as we move through this process as a school with many changes needed to ensure this is a smooth transition.
Invigor8ing Program 2019
Congratulations to Lachlan F., Hayden K. and Lorenzo S. of Year 8 who graduated from the Invigor8ing Program last night in a ceremony held at The Edge at Westfield Plenty Valley. Run by YMCA Whittlesea, the program brings together selected students from five local schools. Over the course of Semester Two these students attended either Melbourne Polytechnic in a Trade Stream or TRAC (Thomastown Recreation and Aquatic Centre) in a Community Stream every Friday, gaining confidence and skills in a variety of trade or industry fields. Well done to these three students on representing themselves and the school so well.
Please be reminded that Week 11 is jammed packed to finish off the year. Class parties and Meet the Teacher for our primary students will happen on Thursday 19th December. Notes have gone out to families regarding this day. Please ask the front office or your child’s classroom teacher if you have any questions.
On Thursday 19th December at 2:30 pm in our Early Years staff room we will be celebrating our classroom helpers and volunteers with a special afternoon tea to say thank you for all your support and time this year. Your time is greatly appreciated.
Just a final reminder that school finishes on Friday 20th December at 1:15 pm. Thank you to parents who have supported our wonderful school. Have a great Christmas and New Year and l look forward to seeing you all back here at The Lakes in 2020.
