From the Senior Sportsmaster

On Saturday evening the College had the honour of hosting the 34th Annual Combined Christian Brothers Carnival at the spectacular North Sydney Olympic Pool nestled under the Harbour Bridge and next to Luna Park.  The Student Leadership Team were outstanding,  assisting the College staff in the coordination of everything from timekeeping, judging, score recording through to ribbon distribution and catering for the masses.  Both staff and students received praise from our fellow Christian Brothers' schools for their efforts.

My thanks go to the staff and students who generously gave up their time to make sure the carnival was a successful one enjoyed by all.

Basketball

Dear Parents and Students,

Please do not abuse the referees at the Semi Finals this weekend. Even if the referees' decisions are less that satisfactory it is embarrassing for the College and for me as the Convenor of Basketball.  Positive reinforcement and encouragement of our players is the best response we can give when controversial calls are made.  Players need to focus on the game and not the referees if they want to win close matches.

All teams must provide one parent to do the score bench at the semi-finals so please offer to help on the bench.

Semi Finals: There are TWO VENUES for finals this Saturday. Please note times and venues in the draw below.

Game of the Day: The 15F Team saved their best until last. After nine rounds and no wins, they finished with a well-deserved victory.

Play of the day: Tom Hanley slots the winner for the 14Ds. The only time they lead the match was at the end of the game.

Deserves a mention: Will Halliday – 13A. Oliver Aylmer, James Hanna – 13C. Jake Ormsby – 13D.

Ben Kafer, Matt Brannann Nick Biefeld – 14A. Nate Arena, Austin Cleary, Talis Prior – 14C.

Jamie Corcoran, Ryan Ho – 14D. Harrison Gregoric, Joel Ghannoum – 15A.

Will Hay, Christian Santelli – 15D. Will Morris, Noah Morabito, James Bleasdale – 17C.

Matt Ledbury – 3rds. Jonathan Stewart, Declan Dowling – 4ths.

ISA Round 10 –1st XI v Central Coast Grammar School at Oxford Falls

In the final round of the ISA competition the 1st XI hosted CCGS. Batting first, the home side were forced to fight for their runs by the bowlers. The loss of our top three batsmen Adam Greenwood (17), Tom Colgan (12) and James Brown (17) after all made starts made the going more difficult. However Liahm Williams (78) mixed solid defence with clean hitting in a very good partnership with Jordan Furlan (24). After 50 overs St Pius X finished on 9-167 with very few boundaries being struck again on a slow and big outfield.

Mackenzie Carrall (4-10 off 10 overs) was the best of the bowlers as he challenged the batsman with his consistent probing off-spinners. He was supported by Liahm Williams (3-16), while Alex Bain and Tim McLachlan each picked up a wicket to have the opposition dismissed for 97.  This result placed the 1st XI third on the ISA Division 1 ladder and they will travel to St Patrick’s Strathfield for a semi-final next Saturday.

ISA 1st XI Representative Selection

SPX Cricket congratulates 1st XI Captain, James Brown, on his deserved selection in the ISA 1st XI combined team. This team will play games against representative teams form other school associations. We wish James all the best at Bradman Oval on Wednesday and at Oxford Falls the following Monday.

Swimming

Senior Swimming Squad:  We had a successful evening at the Annual Christian Brothers' Swimming Carnival which was hosted by the College at North Sydney Pool last Saturday evening. St Pius X College managed to achieve fourth place overall which is a great achievement. The carnival was run with precision due to the overwhelming help from staff and students who made it a success.

Our next fixture is the ISA Carnival to be held at SOPAC on Wednesday 14th March. Not all swimmers will be attending.   Swimmers must check the team list, which will be up this Friday morning,  to see if they are swimming.

Any swimmer who would like to enter themselves into 100m form strokes, 200m form strokes and longer distance races for the CIS Carnival, could you please let Ms Proc know of the distance, time and what carnival it was achieved at. They will then be submitted to the ISA for consideration.

NSTA Tennis

What a great morning of tennis, thanks once again to the senior boys Declan Langreiter, Daniel Scipioni, Ben Casey, Jamie Todd, Cole Simpson, Cameron Fernandopulle and Anton Langreiter who acted as our mentors/umpires. Lachlan Jurcevic and Tom Sweeney had an exciting doubles match that was decided in a tie breaker.  Unfortunately St Pius X lost but great sportsmanship was seen throughout the game. Pius 18, made up of Aiden Saraceno and Franklin Clayton, was up against boys in Year 12 from Redlands. Despite a fantastic effort by the SPX team they were pipped at the post by Redlands. It was great to see the spirit in which this game was played and the fun that all players had.

The day began to warm up for the second session and this added to the pressure out on the court. Kobe DuMoulin and Jarred Lam played exceptionally well in their matches, especially the doubles which saw them claim victory, despite the heat, in a match that lasted for over an hour and ended in a nail-biting tie-breaker. It is always exciting to see the Pius vs Pius matches and the game against SPX 6 and SPX 7 was no exception. Max Leo and Anton Langreiter narrowly beat Andrew McKinnon and Tom Fong in their singles matches 6-5, 6-5.  This added to a 6-0 win in the doubles by SPX 6 and awarded them the match.

Please note that the venue for the Pius 17 game this weekend against Barker Girls 4 is scheduled to play at Wheatleigh St.
