Year 4

Inquiry Report by Tennelle - Indigenous Australia:

This term the Year Fours have been learning about Indigenous Aboriginal culture, in particular, in the last few weeks, amazing Indigenous art works. I am aboriginal and I know a lot about the culture.

I have learnt lots about my culture through stories and pictures, this is the way the culture is taught to the young, by the elders of a tribe. In Inquiry we worked in action groups to make our project collaborative and exciting. My group chose to focus on dot paintings. I have done many dot paintings at home, the one I brought to show our classes was about a snake. When people from a tribe create a dot painting each painting has a different story because each tribe has a different story. I would like to know lots more about my story. I do know how to say welcome in my language, all you have to say is ‘Wominjika’.

Once I went to a special celebration for NAIDOC week with my family, we saw traditional dancing and my siblings got to play the clapping sticks. The clapping sticks are a type Indigenous instrument, my family members got to play the didgeridoo. Did you know that only men can play the didgeridoo in the Aboriginal culture?  It is so important to remember that the Indigenous people are the first Australians, this is why the culture is so special.
