Visual Media and Digital Photography

Semester One: Visual Media and Digital Photography

This term , in our Visual Media and Digital Photography class, we worked on some short films. We concentrated on coming up with stories of strong conflict and then writing film scripts.

We tried to keep it pretty basic, but many of us found that even simple stories are difficult to tell through the medium of film. Constantly thinking about how things will have to look in front of the camera can be a real challenge.

Then we had to scout out locations around the school and then start shooting. This is when the real fun began. Chase scenes, robberies and even death! These were just some of the stories we created.

Shooting was actually quite hard. There were so many things to remember and look out for: continuity, props, angles and which shots to use, to best tell each part of the story.

Once we filmed all our scenes in long shot, mid-shot, close up and over the shoulder shots, we had to edit them together. This was hard. We were advised to make detailed shot lists to keep track of which shots were worth using but most of us didn’t do this. Why didn’t we listen to Paul? It would have saved us a lot of time in editing.

Although most of us didn’t quite get all our shots, we were able to put together a simple story or a preview. Making movies is fun!
