Year 3 Inquiry Fun:

STATES OF MATTER

States of Matter report by Jun. O from 3C:

We learnt all about States of Matter. We learnt all about particles first. Particles are very interesting. Although it seems we learnt only about particles, we actually learnt more about states of matter. States of matter (solid, liquid and gas) were interesting to learn about and we also learnt about temperature. Later we also did some experiments.

Particles:

A particle is something that is small, existing inside big or small things. You know everything contains 1 or more particles. Most things have more than 1 particle. Inside particles there are more and more smaller particles.

A Solid:

A solid is something that you can’t pour. If you poke it it doesn’t move. Your finger can’t go through it. A solid stays where it is unless you move it.

A Liquid:

A liquid is something you can pour. If you poke it it moves. A liquid can change its shape. You can let it move by itself like a lake.

A Gas:

Gases are everywhere in the world. They are in the Periodic Table. Gases are eg; air, carbon, oxygen, hydrogen and helium.

Our Experiments:

I can’t explain everyone’s experiments, but l can tell you about mine. Mine was the Balloon Pin Experiment. I used 2 pins and 1 balloon. I blew up the balloon and popped it – it wasn’t supposed to pop but it did.

So now you know what l learnt in Inquiry this term. Inquiry is fun when you get to learn about science. Everyone in the classroom had different ideas.

Year 3 Inquiry by Vignesh. S from 3C:

In Year 3 we learnt about States of Matter. We learnt that everything has matter. The three states of matter are liquid, solid and gas. A solid is something that won’t change its shape unless we add heat. We can tell if something is a solid if we can’t put our hand in it. The particles in a solid are squished and packed together.

A liquid is something that can change its shape pretty quickly, like water. If you put water in a glass and try to put it in a funny glass it would work because it can change its shape. The particles in water are more spread out. Finally if you add more heat you can change liquid into a gas. There are lots of gases in the world and one of them is air. The gas particles are spread out and move very fast. In Inquiry we learnt lots about states of matter but we also learnt about particles.  Particles are in everything. They are even in our bodies. Particles come in all sizes. Most times they are small.

Near the end of term we all did an experiment. I thought a long time about this and l finally got an idea. My idea was coke and mentos. Other people also had creative ideas. My experiment didn’t work out because I did not do it properly. Anyway, part of science is finding out our mistakes.

I really loved this term of Inquiry. We liked it because we did all different things and experiments. It was different and that is what I liked the most.
