Year 2 Incursion – All Mixed Up

.5/6 Sane and Year 2 Students.

On Tuesday the 5/6 SANE (Science And Nothing Else) students came to visit us in the Year 2 space. They came here to help us learn about mixing materials. We have been learning about mixtures this term in Inquiry.

Before we started our science experiments, we had to make a prediction about what will happen. The SANE students showed us how to do each experiment. Whilst they were showing us, we had to make observations about what was happening and write them in our book. After they were finished, we got to have a go. We had to explain what happened in each experiment.

The first experiment was called ‘Have a Drink’. Our job was to try and clean some dirty water as fast as we can. We tried to clean the water by pouring it through some paper towel, rocks and a cloth. Little drops went through the materials and made the water much cleaner. The dirt was trapped by the rocks at the top of the jar.

The next experiment we did was called ‘Mystery Liquid”. We had to guess what colour the Mystery Liquid would turn into. The SANE students used 3 types of liquids. These were a Base, an Acid and a Neutral. They added these to different mixtures and the colour changed.

After that we did an experiment called ‘Let’s Break the Tension’. We were trying to find out what would happen to our piece of paper when we put it in different liquids. The two liquids were water and the other one was a secret liquid. When we put the paper in the water it was able to float. When we put the paper into the mystery liquid it spread out and we saw a face on the paper. We found out the mystery liquid was…….dish washing detergent!

The last experiment was called ‘Chromatography Art’. We were looking at what happened to the colour on our paper when we placed it into the water. The first thing we had to do was colour in our paper with texta. Next we had to fold our paper in four parts which made the shape of a cone. Finally we had to place our paper in the water to see what would happen. The texta on the paper spread all over and made a beautiful design. The SANE students dried out the piece of paper with a hair dryer.

We learnt lots of new things about science. The SANE students did a fantastic job teaching us!!!

Year 8 on Early Years:

‘How can an entrepreneur meet the needs and wants of The Lakes community?’

This unit was all about bringing out the inner business person in everyone. We learnt about planning, marketing (finding the Purple Cow), budgeting and sales. As part of the $20 Boss project students chose groups to work in and designed, created and sold products on the Middle Years Campus. With such a wide range of businesses students were spoiled for choice for 3 weeks as things such as slime, fruit salad, and pancakes were enjoyed. Huge lessons were learnt about what it takes to get a business up and running and so with that in mind students regrouped and focused on the much anticipated return of Market Day to The Lakes. What a mind blowing day was had on the Early Years Campus as food, drink, goods and services were enjoyed by all.
