Year 7 Pen Pal Visit

Over the last two terms, the Year 7 04 Class has been writing letters to members of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, St Andrews Church and Trinity Greens Residential Home. This was planned as part of the Christian Living Service unit where students develop ways to serve within the local community. The Year 7s have also learnt how to write formal letters, use their initiative and develop their conversational skills.

In the lead up to the Pen Pals’ visit on Tuesday 3 December, the class planned an assembly to present to their Pen Pals, created maps for school tours and also cooked a morning tea. Students were able to choose an area where they were able to use their gifts and worked in small groups to plan the morning. Many students were able to shine in their roles and learnt many new things about working in teams and planning an event.

It was great to see the Pen Pals and Year 7 students meeting for the first time after only communicating with each other through letters. Many Year 7 students saw the Pen Pals as role models and took this opportunity to learn even more about their lives and listen to the wisdom they had to pass on. It was good to see the students and their Pen Pals laughing and interacting with each other while on school tours and during morning tea.

The Year 7 04 Core class would like to thank the members of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, St Andrews Church and Trinity Greens Residential Home for their participation in the Pen Pal program. We would also like to thank Mrs Sandford-Morgan for her organisation and helping the students to prepare scones for morning tea.

Community Service

This has been a very busy term!

Earlier in the term, Care Groups packed boxes for Shoeboxes of Love which will go to children of families affected by natural disasters in Australia. More recently Christmas Hamper donations were placed under the Christmas Trees in the Middle Years centre. These have now been delivered (and were gratefully received) to Lutheran Community Care who will pack them into hampers for local families in need. Thank you to Miss Dunstan’s Year 7 class for decorating the hamper boxes.

The Student Action Team and Spence Village raised money to support the work of Australian Lutheran World Service overseas. Their efforts, combined with the donation tin at the canteen, purchased a range of gifts from the Gifts of Grace catalogue to support people in Burundi, South Sudan, Somalia and Cambodia.

Staff and Mackillop Village also donated to Hutt St Centre where money will be used to support Adelaide’s homeless people over the Christmas period.

Thank you to all the members of our community who supported these service initiatives. Many people will benefit from your generosity!
