Year 7 Science

Oh no! Santa’s Sleigh Has Broken Down!

Don’t panic, the Year 7.5 Core Science class investigated how to deliver the presents if repairs can’t be done in time. Students were given a template design of a Christmas Copter (paper helicopter) and using the scientific method, altered the design one feature at a time, to investigate the most efficient way to deliver the toys to the good girls and boys. Some made alternate sized or alternate shaped rotor blades, compared overall size, changed materials that the copter was made from or investigated various weight distributions. Safe to say, if the sleigh can’t be fixed, everyone will miss out on a gift delivery this Christmas.

Middle Years Concert

On Wednesday 27 November, the Mall was alive with the sounds of trumpets, flutes, clarinets and drums! (and various other instruments) The Year 7, 8 and 9 Music students had been preparing their pieces throughout Term 4 and were proud to show their progress to family and friends. The night commenced with a set from the Year 8 Band, who performed fun tunes such as ‘The Flintstones Theme’, ‘Attack of the Slide Trombones’ which featured Ann Challis on trombone, and the ‘George of the Jungle’ theme song.

The Middle Years Band performed several pieces, including ‘Traffic Jam Blues’ which featured a traffic jam in the middle of the piece (involving students honking at each other). The Junior Vocal Ensemble performed two songs, the highlight being ‘Green Eggs and Ham’ from Seussical the Musical. The Year 9 Band finished off the night with some great tunes such as the funky ‘Canned Heat’ by Jamiroquai.

Various students performed as soloists, and they are to be commended for their courage in taking this step. After the concert, guests enjoyed supper outdoors under the Anzac Pavillion. A big thank you to Cameron Barrett for doing sound, and to teachers Ashley Nott and Charisa Sanders for their direction of ensembles.

Year 9 Languages Day Out

Japanese

On Monday 25 November, the Year 9 Japanese and Literacy students went on a huge day out to experience Japanese culture and food in the heart of Adelaide city. Firstly, students were treated to a tour of Himeji Gardens and then walked to the Adelaide Central Markets where they undertook a scavenger hunt. During this activity, students located many different shops that sell Japanese food and ‘omiyage’ (souvenirs). Students also learned about places they could go to buy ingredients to cook their own Japanese dishes and restaurants they could visit should they wish to take their families out for a Japanese eating experience!

After the Scavenger Hunt, students were treated to an obento lunch in Victoria Square which adequately built up their energy so they could belt out their favourite songs during an hour long karaoke session at ‘The Voice’, Gouger St.

The day was a fun filled, exciting and a valuable experience for the students and staff. A perfect way to end the year for the Year 9 Languages students.

German

The German Day Out was a day full of excitement where the Year 9 students perambulated around the Barossa Valley.

The students were entertained with old fashioned German bowling at the Tanunda Kegelbahn, which is one of the country’s oldest sporting clubs. They learnt a little about the region’s German settlement history through a visit to the historic Luhr’s Cottage and the Langmeil Lutheran Church and cemetery.

Finally, the students were treated to traditional German fare which included pretzels, bienenstich and streusel cakes. A WUNDERBAR day was had by all in attendance!
