SPORT

YEAH THE GIRLS!

It has been a busy few months of sport for Sasha Nelson and me here at Footscray City. We have been a part of three teams making it through to the regional level of competition, in AFL, Netball and Soccer. We also look forward to taking on the inter school teams for Basketball coming up in a few short weeks.

On Monday the 24 June the Year 7 and 8 Girls AFL team participated in the inter school AFL competition. The girls had lots of fun on the day and worked really well together as a team. Our first game was a harsh loss to Maribyrnong but we came back with great wins against Brookside and Creekside. This booked us a place to the next round, on 8 August. We took on Williamstown High School, Manor Lakes and Matthew Flinders. Unfortunately, we did not win but showed great determination throughout the day. Well done to Edie Warhurst, our only goal scorer of the day and to the team for continuing to show great spirit despite the windy conditions. Thanks to Charlie Banks, Sam Hall, Harley Robinson and Max Wigmore for helping the team on the day and Jonathon, a student teacher for helping with team tactics and coaching.

On Wednesday 26 June the Year 8 Girls Netball team secured their place into the second round of inter school sports. It was a very enjoyable day and Netball is a great passion of mine so playing with my mates for school was lots of fun. Unfortunately, we didn’t win any of our games but always put in 100% no matter what the score was and only lost by 3 goals to the Sports Academy Williamstown High. Our coaches Emily Fredricks and Isobel Robertson were also a great help for us girls. Go Footscray!

On Thursday 27 June the Year 7 and 8 Girls Soccer team competed in the second round of the competition. In our pool, we were undefeated in the 3 matches. The final was a competitive match against Keilor Downs College, resulting in a draw and leading to overtime and penalty shoot outs. Grace Lewicki was a star forward and the leading goal scorer for the day, always looking likely to score when the ball was up forward. Minami Yamasaki Davis and Edie Warhurst were inspirational leaders, captaining the day. Thanks to our great coaches Ayden Callus and Cooper Williams for all the help. We’ll Get 'Em Next Time!
