2020 Course Selection For Year 9’s

Current Year 9’s will receive information about subjects available to choose at a meeting on Monday during RAPS. They will get a copy of descriptions of the subjects as well as a subject selection sheet. They should bring this along to Parent Teacher interviews late next week so that you can all discuss possible course choices for 2020. Of course, nearly all these students (and many parents) have already engaged in a discussion about future choices as part of the Career Interviews held last month.

Then on the 1st Thursday of term 4 (Thursday 10th October) we are holding a course submission day for all current Yr 9’s. This will be a student-free day for Year 9’s so that they can come along and attend with their parent, discuss their subject choices and have their preferences entered online with a counsellor. Session times available to book a 15 minute appointment to submit subject choices are between 10:00 am and 12:45 or 3:15 and 5:45. Book with Jess in the main office on 5820 9900.

Beacon Foundation – Perform Workshop

Tuesday 15th October all Year 11 VCAL students will be participating in a fantastic whole-day program courtesy of the Beacon Foundation.  The program, called ‘Perform’, is specifically designed to support young people embarking on crucial decisions about their life after school.

The program improves employment opportunities by helping students to understand recruitment trends and practices, build self-awareness for individual and team success and gain insights into common workplace expectations. This year Beacon is generously providing this program free to our students.

Perform is a high energy one-day program delivered by a professional Beacon Facilitator and supported by the participation of industry mentors from your business community. This powerful combination ensures the students are engaged in and receiving practical, real-world tools that can be implemented immediately after completing the program.

Workshop topics include understanding workplace expectations, working effectively within a team, personal branding, interview techniques, recruitment processes, resume’ preparation and personality profiling.

The program will be run at Wanganui in the SLC. Morning tea and lunch will be provided and students will be joined by their teachers and industry mentors. It will commence at 9:15am and run until 2:30 pm. Students can then either make their own way home or remain in the SLC until the end of the day.

Opportunity for Year 11’s to Join La Trobe’s Bradford Program

La Trobe University are calling for applications from interested Year 11’s to join their Bradford Program. The Bradford program will help to prepare our local students with skills and confidence they need to progress to university, and also provide a good foundation for university study. Applications can be collected from Mr Crosbie in the SLC.

Other students may just be interested in gaining new skills and experiences through a traineeship before applying for other work in 2021.
