English Extension 2

The gates opened today and the 2020 cohort for the English Extension 2 course commenced their study. Students select this course as additional study beyond their compulsory 2 Units of English for the HSC. It involves individual extensive research and a final product of extended composition.

Today, the class was asked what formed The Writer’s Toolkit.  We looked at Stephen King’s description of his Uncle Oren’s carpenter’s toolbox and then discussed the metaphor.

Students were then given the rest of the class time to create their own ‘toolbox’ and put into it all the ‘tools’ they would need to be an effective English Extension 2 student.

Each student developed their own representation of their Metaphoric Writer’s Toolbox and presented these to the class. A very successful lesson in formative assessment; the pursuit of personal interests and responses; metaphoric thinking; research and; individual composition.

I am looking forward to the next four terms with these creative, inspired and inspirational students.
