Reading

In Reading, students have been engaging in alphabet and word work. Grade Prep have been enjoying our SMART Spelling Program. Last week, our word of the week was ‘Cat’  and this week, our word of the week was ‘Ant’ and we have been engaging in different activities to understand the letters and their sounds. We have also been completing purposeful reading tasks to help students to achieve their reading goals.

See below for some photos of Prep D students doing their purposeful reading tasks

Writing

In Grade Prep, we have been writing about what we have played with during the discovery time. Students verbalised what they played with and teachers recorded their words on the brainstorm. In their writing book, students drew their pictures of what they played with and then they wrote the words by referring to the brainstorm.

Numeracy

In Numeracy, Grade Prep students have been learning about how to count, order, compare and make model of numbers from 1 to 20. Students have also learnt about days of the week and months of the year by sing the songs. We have looked at simple patterns and learnt how to create our own patterns.

SWPB

In SWPB, Grade Prep students have been learning about school value of being respectful and how to choose good friends and good learning friends. We also developed our understanding of the meaning of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags. Grade Prep students did an amazing job in doing Acknowledgement of Country in our morning routine.

Congratulations to all Prep students for attending their first assembly of the year!!!

Year 4 News

Numeracy is our big focus this year at Dohertys Creek College. The Teachers are very busy creating and organising activities that would initiate the spark of thinking mathematically. Students are being encouraged to try different strategies that good mathematicians use. The pictures below, show students are busy working on the ‘Tricky Twenty Triangle’ activity. The students were asked to arrange the numbers 1 to 9 in a triangular fashion so that each side adds up to 20.

Year 6 news

Grade six has been great so far and we have had an amazing start to the year! In math we’ve been learning about problem solving with Michael Manis and different methods of multiplication with Luke. In writing we’ve been learning about parts of speech and in reading, we are reading a class novel called ‘The Dragonkeeper’. We also have a project for Inquiry which is a passion project.

Our school has a new specialist subject, science, in which we are learning about sustainability and waste. In Mandarin, we are learning about loan words and learned a new song titled, “I want to Eat!” Art has been fantastic, as we have been making and painting plaster hands made using plaster inside gloves. Discus is a sport we are learning about in Phys Ed each week.

We also have interschool sports coming up and have been training for basketball, volleystars, and t-ball. The most exciting part is that we have surfing coming up in Torquay! We also have an excursion to Parliament House in the city with Sarah Connolly, our local MP. We are all looking forward to everything to come in grade six!
