Somers Camp

On Tuesday the 13th to Wednesday the 21st of August, Tameka and Alannah, alongside 159 other 5/6 students and 7 other visiting teachers from other schools in the Northern region attended and began their experience for life at Somers Camp. They participated in a range of activities like art, singing, dancing, acting, cycling, bush cooking, absailing, rock climbing, archery, the challenge swing, the flying fox, high and low ropes courses and group initiatives. The permanent teaching staff, as well as the visiting teachers encourage and teach their students in strategies of overcoming homesickness, meeting new people, taking a step out of their comfort zone and setting and achieving challenging, but yet achieveable goals.

From Tameka, Grade 6 Student in Ulysses

Hi, my name is Tameka and I’m going to tell you about the adventures I had on Somers camp. I committed myself to 9 days away from home and the only person I knew was Alannah. As I arrived, I met 19 girls who I shared my hut with. Two of them girls I believe I can be friends with for life.

On the first day, we unpacked and settled in. My first duty on camp was being a table host. Being a table host involved washing the dishes and serving dinner, lunch and breakfast. Over the course of the camp, we did a variety of activities to build my social skills and challenge ourselves for the future. Some of the activities were did were archery, environmental studies, boating, the challenge swing, high ropes, low ropes, rock climbing, absailing, bush cooking, bike education and team initiatives. We also had some night activities like a disco, night walk, concert, tabloid sports, team building activities, bush dance and a camp fire.

Something I took out away from camp was my love for archery. I think I have become more confident in myself and making new friends. This camp goes every 2 years and I recommend the 3/4s go to Somers camp when the opportunity comes, just like I did. Thank you!

National Health and Physical Education Day

We will be celebrating this on the last day of term with a footy fever theme where all students can wear their favourite sports team and donate a gold coin to the school. We are currently looking at some options of some fun Health and PE related activities to help celebrate the day. Stay tuned!
