Ulysses Community Report

August Update

Ulysses have had a busy August. With inter school athletics, Science week, Book week and an excursion to Craigieburn Secondary College to watch their performance of the Little Mermaid

Our Learning

Reading

We have been working on comprehension over the last few weeks. We are making connections and going back to re read if something doesn't make sense

Writing

We have been practicing our speech writing skills recently and had a mini competition in our community to see who could create the most persuasive speech. Aaron got to present his speech at assembly today.

Maths

We have been working on multiplicative thinking this term in Ulysses. We have been playing games to improve our automatic recall, playing Kahoot quizzes to engage in multiplication and division strategies and we have been applying our knowledge while working in groups.

SEL

This term in Ulysses we have been working on the Zones of Regulation during our SEL sessions. Students have been categorising the way they feel and discussing how it affects behaviours. We have been talking about ways to self-regulate if we aren’t in the Green Zone (ready to learn.) Ulysses students have done a fantastic job of coming up with their own toolbox with strategies on what to do if they are in the Yellow, Blue or Red zone. Independent regulation is a great way of managing feelings and ensuring that we are happy, calm and in a frame of mind to learn.

The Little Mermaid

Some students went to Craigieburn Secondary College to see their production of The Little Mermaid with Emily. "It was the best play ever" says Mohamed.

District Athletics

In week 7 some of our community competed in athletics against several other schools in the Greenvale and Craigieburn district. Our competitors tried their best and performed really well in events such as: long jump, shot put, discus as well as 100 metre, 800 metre races and relay. Congratulations on those that competed on the day! Some of our students will go on to district athletics later on this year. A great effort.

Book Week

We had a blast this book week, students helped to decorate the door and had fun dressing up on the Friday. We all had a buddy session with Xenica to make some masks.

Home Learning

In years 5 and 6 the aim of homework is to build on the concepts of self-discipline, responsibility and initiative to prepare students for secondary school.

Homework tasks will consist of daily independent reading and spelling or unfinished classwork. Next term assignments, essays and research may be sent home.

Students are generally not expected to spend more than 45 minutes per day on homework and no homework tasks will be assigned over the weekends or during the holidays.

Important Notes to Remember

* Doors open at 8:40am and class begins at 8:50am, students who arrive after this time are required to get a late pass from the office.

* Students should be reading nightly with the title and pages read to be recorded in their diaries.

* New spelling words go home each Thursday this term and will still be in student diaries. Students are expected to practise spelling for 10 minutes each night, if you need a list of ideas to practise spelling words feel free to see Bec Thursday afternoons or email through Sentral.

* We are currently working on multiplication and division, practising times tables nightly will be a great support.

*  If you haven't yet purchased an iPad please look into doing so, it is an important learning tool. A list of iPad apps will be sent home shortly, in the meantime please remember to bring iPads charged and ready to go.

Kind regards,

Bec, Trent and Chloe
