Caine’s Arcade – A Project Based Math Project

In 2011 Caine, a 9 year old boy, built and ran his own cardboard arcade out of his dad’s auto shop. This term a number of Year 6 math groups have taken inspiration from this project creating their very own Caine’s Arcade!

The arcade was used to teach chance and probability with students calculating the probabilities associated with their game. They also had hands on experience to collect data and create an array of data displays.

On Monday 26th November students from Grade 2 and 5 visited CHPS’s first cardboard arcade, cashing in tokens to play games and making real world math connections!

It was the “best cardboard arcade I’ve ever been to! This was fun and educational, we’d love to learn like this!” – Harry (Year 5)

“It was a really different approach to maths and I loved it!” – Ted (Year 6)

“I thought it was really great to do interactive maths and actually building something and I really liked getting to collaborate with others. I also thought it was helpful to get the feedback from the Grade 2 & 5’s.” – Lily (Year 6)
