Principal's Message
As we approach the mid-point of Term 3, it is important to remember that for our HSC students, it marks the beginning of the end of their time at Lake Illawarra High and their secondary schooling. In the coming weeks, they will be finishing up their studies and focusing on their Trial HSC Exams and then the HSC itself.
At this time it is crucial that our students continue to access the support structures that are in the school, beginning with their teachers. The staff are extremely keen to help our students with any questions they have regarding their subject, or to give support with study routines, marking of past papers or advice on anything that may support them in their final few weeks. To our HSC students in particular, I urge you to take advantage of every support that is on offer.
Our new multipurpose courts are nearing completion, which is exciting news for many of our students who love to take part in basketball, soccer, volleyball and so on. We hope to have this wonderful resource in use over the next couple of weeks for both classes and during break times.
Finally, attendance at school is one of the most effective ways of ensuring that students remain engaged with their education. Lack of attendance means that students fall behind which makes it that much harder to keep up with what is happening in the classroom ... so students then miss more school and they fall further behind. All students should be attending every day unless they are sick or there are other issues. It is vitally important that if issues do occur that the school is contacted.

Deputies' Report
Welcome back to Term 3. We look forward to working with students, their families and community members over the next 10 weeks as we get our students ready for assessments, carnivals and of course the HSC.
The first day of this term was our School Development Day for all staff. This was a great day where staff, had the opportunity to share their expertise to their colleagues on ways to improve the learning outcomes and to further support our students. I would like to thank all those involved in the day, not only for their insightful presentations, but also for the ‘behind the scenes’ preparation which they personally invested their own time, to ensure that their colleagues had the best possible chance to further their personal professional development.
Last term our school participated in the Zone Athletics carnival, where we again performed very well. We have 8 students heading to Canberra to compete for places in the South Coast Athletics team and we wish these students the best of luck. I would also like to congratulate the students on their excellent behaviour and sportsmanship on the day. I would also like to thank Mrs Hartas for organising our school team.
Last week, Year 10 had their first look at the subjects they may wish to choose to study for their HSC in 2020 at our Subject Selection evening. This evening was attended by representatives from each faculty, as well as representatives from the University of Wollongong and NSW TAFE. I would like to thank all of the staff who attended the evening and set up such fantastic displays. Although the 2020 HSC may seem like a life time away, students start this selection process now so that staff can build a curriculum structure to support their selections and assist them in achieving their career goals.
We have had an increasing amount of students who are either locking their bikes outside the gate of the bike compound or who are just placing their bikes outside the fence of the bike compound. This is causing a concern as it is a WH&S risk for staff, and students and the practice is also encouraging other students to do the same. I have spoken to many students regarding this, as well as, each day moving bikes back into the compound. As of next week, any bike found outside the compound will be chained to the fence by the Deputies and the students who own the bike will need to speak to the Deputy to have it unlocked. If your child rides their bike to school, can you please encourage them to secure their bike inside the compound.
Finally, I would like to wish all staff and students a very productive Term 3, particularly our Year 12 students, who are sitting their Trial HSC examinations in the up-coming weeks, best of luck.
