Investigating Science

This term in year 11 investigating science the girls have been looking at assumptions in Science and how discovery through experimentation has led to many assumptions of how the world works being proved wrong.

An example of this is Louis Pasteur's work on how new life formed. There were thoughts 400 years ago that new life just spontaneously spawned from nothing to create new life.

The girls replicated his experiment where they made chicken broth from a BBQ chicken carcass and then left it to set with different lids that may have allowed microbes to fall into the broth or not. The results didn't follow Pasteur's finding but the girls did an excellent job at replicating his experiment.

Stage 4 English

Students are currently engaged in a novel study. They are reading Trash, by British writer, Andy Mulligan.

The narrative takes place  in a dumpsite and extremely large city in a third world country.

Each class has already researched huge dumpsite villages, looked at the places children around the world live,  and made predictions about plot, characters and  themes.

The reading of the novel will take several weeks and students will continue to engage with a range of activities centreing around language features, characterisation and the development of comprehension skills.

Art and About

Eighteen students from the Primary and High School participated in a collaborative excursion with other schools from the region to visit the National Art Gallery in Canberra. They explored the Sculpture Garden before meeting guides and educators to learn about a variety of artworks throughout the Gallery.

Secondary students had the opportunity to practise their skills under the watchful eye of their guide, Sam, who complimented them on their enthusiasm and manners.

Primary students continued to explore artworks across the Gallery with all taking a great interest in the melting man, which was a changing artwork of melting wax.

The program continues this week with art making activities being held in Yass, Gunning and Wee Jasper with local artists.

Both groups are currently working on rock and pop songs by Vance Joy, Birds of Tokyo, Angus and Julia Stone - and even some old Blues Brothers tunes. It's a very open and supportive environment - so no expertise or skill necessary! See Mr Stuart for a note to attend.
