Year 10 Work Experience
A highlight for Year 10 students is the opportunity to go into the work place and experience paid employment, sometimes for the first time. This can be daunting for some and it is important to be able to move students out of their comfort zone. I believe work experience is always worthwhile even if a student decides at the end that they definitely do not want to do a particular job. Sometimes the romanticism of a particular occupation is removed by being in that workplace. That is a good thing as young people develop a realistic idea of what a particular job may entail and learn some basic work related skills. Finally, if a student is able to find their own work placement and organise getting to and from work that engenders terrific self-confidence for them. That is a wonderful thing for these young people who will be transitioning into the workplace over the next few years.
Thanks to our Careers Counsellor, Melissa Dillon, who once again did an amazing job organising the program and the numerous teachers who visited students on work experience.
Year 11 SWAC - Thursday, 13 June
On Thursday, 13 June, the Year 11 students engaged in a Fit2Drive Course at the Cranbourne Campus. The Fit to Drive Foundation Inc. is a not for profit organisation dedicated to reducing road trauma in young people aged 16 to 25. Our focus is on building the capacity of young people to make good decisions when faced with risky situations on our roads, whether as a passenger or a driver. The Foundation is about changing attitudes and behaviours - not teaching driving skills.
The philosophy of the Fit to Drive Foundation incorporates the belief that young people have the capacity to change and influence attitudes and behaviours in relation to risky road use, and supports them to take ownership and responsibility for their own and their peers' safety.
In addition to the young volunteer presenters, our students heard from Leading Senior Constable Dave Smith, who works closely with us at St. Peter's College, and a representative from the Metropolitan Fire Brigade. First responders to a car crash can give important insight into the impact that these events have not just on those involved in crashes but the families, friends and wider community.
I encourage you to ask your Year 11 child about what they learned especially during those times when you are supervising them…and they cannot escape your questioning!
On the same afternoon, we had a presentation on Safe Partying by Sonya Karras. Sonya is a seasoned and refreshing presenter with a no nonsense approach. She has 10 Years of experience in the Hospitality Industry in some of Melbourne’s largest venues, covering all facets including bar, managing and even time as a ‘crowd controller’. This allowed Sonya to collect the stories and information she presents in her “Whole New World” safe partying program.
A mix of solid strategies and funny anecdotes, Sonya keeps her audience informed, educated and laughing while they learn. Sonya’s brand of straight talking, non-preachy presentation resonates with young people, parents and teachers.
She is often told she has the ability to connect with young people in a way which allows them to immediately feel comfortable with her, Sonya’s presentations leave a lasting impression.
If you want an insight into what Sonya is presenting so that you can discuss it with your child, Sonya, and her business partner Sacha Kaluri have:
- Co-authored the international book “The Two Worlds of Your Teenager” Finch Publishing – click here to purchase
- Created the duel podcasts “The Secret Life of Teens” (parents) and “Sex Drugs and Relationships” (Young people) via Podcast One Australia – download here

This really is two days of celebration and an opportunity for the whole school community to enjoy each other’s company in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. We also want parents to know that they are welcome to attend the St. Peter’s Mass on the Monday and/or the Assembly on the Tuesday. A Care Monkey has now been sent out inviting you to these two events. Please let us know if you are attending the Campus Assembly on Tuesday so that we can ensure that there is adequate seating provided.
Thank you in anticipation of your support on this day.
