Transitioning Back to School - Again

We are so excited to have welcomed back our Year 11 and 12 students this week, and we very much look forward to the rest of our students returning to school on Friday. Our experiences in lockdown last year have helped us to appreciate the simple things, like a normal school day together on campus, and we look forward to this being the norm again soon.

While it is exciting and a relief for some to be back at school, many will experience increased stress and anxiety at another re-adjustment in their lives. The lack of control and changing circumstances contribute to increased anxiety and stress. It is important to acknowledge that the impact on each individual varies broadly.

As lockdown restrictions are slowly being lifted to varying degrees, we enter a time of transition and adjustment once again. The circumstances of this situation, having come on so quickly, have significantly impacted us all. For some it has been an opportunity to reflect on and remind us of what is important. For others, it triggers past trauma. Many young people may be excited at the prospect of restrictions being lifted; others may feel mixed emotions, or feel stressed about the returning to school, having enjoyed and thrived during online learning. Reactions will differ depending on how well they cope with stress and change.

Keeping a check on your child’s mental health and wellbeing as they adjust to new routines, will be vitally important. There is still a lot of uncertainty ahead of us as we hope to move towards reopening again. Focusing on the things you can control or enjoy doing can help establish predictability and familiarity for the whole family. Adult carers need to provide young people with reassurance by acknowledging any concerns and fears that your children may have at this time.

Our Nazareth parent wellbeing online resource SchoolTV  has a Special Report, a short video where Child and Adolescent Psychologist Dr Michael Carr-Gregg shares a few ideas to help ease this time of transition and adjustment. It was published last year, however the central message is as pertinent as ever.

If you do have any concerns about the wellbeing of your child, please contact the school for further information or seek medical or professional help. Please be assured that we will continue to closely monitor our students to assist them through this transition. Here is the link to your SchoolTV special reports:

New Vaping Regulations

In the last newsletter we addressed the concerning issue of young people vaping.

It is important to be aware that both SMOKING and VAPING are banned in all schools.

By law, smoking and vaping are banned within the grounds of, and within four metres of an entrance to, all childcare centres, kindergartens, preschools and schools.

Penalties do apply.
