Hollows House News

Dear Hollows House,

Here we are at the end of week 7. It is absolutely flying by!

With this edition comes the long weekend, plus an extra day for you all to rest, recover and reenergise for the final two weeks of Term 2. Meanwhile, your teachers will be busily writing your reports, finalising marks and assessments and preparing for the end of term as well as the start of Term 3.

Since the last Newshamper edition, students in Hollows House have been incredibly active and engaged in a range of different school activities. The most significant event was our multicultural assembly and the free dress day. Something that we really value as a house is each other’s culture, our backgrounds, beliefs and values. The way that we were all able to represent our backgrounds and cultures through our dress as well as in performances was simply outstanding to see. Furthermore, the way we showed respect, courtesy and gave our full attention throughout the entire assembly once again made me super proud of our house and the students within it. You are all simply awesome!

  • We have celebrated reconciliation week, National Sorry Day, and Mabo Day.
  • Year 7 students have been a part of the ILLY (I like, like you) program through mentoring.
  • We have competed against the other houses in the lunchtime tug-of-war.
  • We have gone a wide variety of excursions and also competed against other schools in rugby tournaments and other sports.

Coming up in the next two weeks,

  • Years 10, 11 and 12 students will undertake their mid-year exams.
  • Year 8 camp to Mill Valley Ranch in Tynong is next week.
  • Year 9 students are going on the city experience.
  • Year 10 work experience and VCAL work placements will be undertaken.

I look forward to hearing about all the upcoming successes of these events and look forward to finishing this busy term off with a bang! Values awards received by Hollows house students for this term:

Jihad (Musa) Musaghazi:

I started working here at HPSC in April of 2016 as an MEA and just before that I was running my own business as a driving instructor, at HPSC when I initially started, I was very nervous and worried whether I’ll be able to support the students effectively or not. I was fortunate that I had many wonderful people around me who motivated me to stay the course, the role of an MEA entailed that not only I was working in class supporting our EAL students with their learning in many different subjects, but there was so much more to it. Most of our EAL cohort belonged to our Refugee and Asylum Seeker community, as an MEA we were a focal point for our EAL students at HPSC, we assisted our students by making sure they were effectively transitioning into our education system.  Our MEA team recognised the need to support our EAL students by establishing an after-school Homework Support Program where many hundreds of students have benefited from. We also made sure that we assisted our students by connecting them to the various departments within our school and by establishing a strong link with the wider community. I have been very fortunate that I was given various professional development opportunities while at HPSC, I completed a Cert 4 in Training and Assessment in 2017, a Graduate Certificate in Career Development Practice in 2021, and currently am studying an Undergraduate Certificate in Mental Health. The various professional development and different experiences throughout the years have given me the motivation to grow professionally. There are different reasons that motivated me to grow in my career, being able to support students to achieve their career aspirations, caring about their wellbeing needs, and assisting with their learning have been my ultimate motivation. This year in 2022 I was very fortunate to be given an opportunity to become a VET Trainer and now an opportunity to become a SLL one day a week at Hollows House.
