On Thursday, 23rd February, the school was host to the Stella Prize’s new ‘Provocations’ series of discussions with authors, which is part of the organisation’s schools program.
The event brought together Leanne Hall, Alice Pung and Rebecca Lim for the first time on a panel to discuss the topic, ‘No One Way to be Asian in Australia’.
The idea for the discussion was inspired by the TED talk from award-winning novelist Chimamanda Ngozie Adichie ‘The Danger of a Single Story’, whose work is being studied by Year 12 English students this year.
In an engaging conversation with Bec Kavanagh, the three women brought unique, personal and often humorous perspectives to the discussion, pushing back against the idea that there is only one Asian Australian story, and demonstrating the importance of welcoming and listening to a wide range of voices.
It was again a great example of the continuing collaboration between the Stella Prize and Northcote HS and made possible thanks to the work of a number of teachers at Northcote, especially Lincoln le Fevre for setting up the recording equipment. The podcast of the event will be available online in the coming weeks.
