Year 7s enjoying the Family Picnic

Events, Opportunities and Connections

The midpoint of  term one is a great opportunity to celebrate family participation in school events. Relationships are key to the work of schools and build communities. Hearing families speak of the benefits of the recent Year 7 Picnic, particularly meeting with other parents, new friends and teachers and finding about the school, clubs and how things work is a ‘win win’ for us all. Other highlights included the Senior Years, Thriving and Surviving workshop, speaking with fellow parents and hearing about school programs, expectation and supports are all a part of school life at Northcote.

These events shout out about the vibrancy of the school and community.  Research continues to highlight the importance of the home school education partnership and nurturing the connections with your child’s friends and families in and beyond the school. Authentic learning/doing experiences in the classroom and beyond featured in so many of the conversations, highlighting the importance of young people being involved in co-curricular activities at school and in the community.  The buzz of our school lives through the myriad of opportunities to ‘get involved’ at Northcote or in the community.

In this issue, you will find important information about upcoming events, including the Student Teacher Parent Conversations (known in a past life as Parent Teacher Interviews), the Swimming Carnival and family and community happenings.  International Women’s Day will be celebrated with AWFL players Darcy Vescio and Nat Exon (Carlton) speaking about women in sport (Jane Lange NHS teacher is Assistant Coach of Carlton), Herstory Hackathon tackles gender barriers in Wikipedia and the Connect Program will feature facts, mini debates, videos and activities to elevate and educate around gender equity.
