Students engage with the Aveo Domainé Retirement Community
Recently our Year 10 students have been engaging with the Aveo Domainé Retirement Community by sending handwritten letters to the elderly who reside there.
During Health and PE class, students have been learning about and investigating the dimensions of health and how improving someone's social health can have a positive impact on their physical and mental health.
The residents expressed their gratitude for receiving these letters and have written responses back to our students. Filled with residents' funny stories, unbelievable life experiences and wise advice, students have loved receiving their replies and many will hold onto these little nuggets of wisdom as they approach adulthood. An extremely worthwhile experience for all involved! Below is a picture of some of my students holding up the letters they received from the residents.

Life as a VCAL student
Have you ever wondered what it’s like as a VCAL student well I’m here to give you the rundown of what VCAL is?
As a VCAL student at Doncaster Secondary College, we are given many opportunities to learn and discover and develop our own skill sets. The VCAL program here is really supportive of our decisions and they help us understand what adulthood / real life is. As students in the VCAL program, teachers are always encouraging you to pursue your long-term goals and support you with every decision you make.
We started our VCAL journey by planning a major project for the school, the project was creating an eye-catching garden that showed off our school. The planning of the garden took many weeks, and many tries to get it right. The VCAL students used many life skills such as budgeting, measuring, researching, planting, teamwork and sharing ideas that helped build the beautiful garden.
Every week as an SBAT student we have our weekly meetings with Nerada about how we are travelling and what we need help with. The AtEast program is very beneficial and encourages the development of students. AtEast is involved in gearing up students to be ready for the workforce or going to TAFE. AtEast has helped many of us settle in as VCAL students.

Why uniform is important
We take uniform very seriously at DSC, and we want students and families to understand why. So here is a quick explanation of how uniform plays an important role in learning and preparing students for life beyond school.
Organisation and Self Discipline
Wearing a uniform correctly requires organisation and self-discipline. These are important skills for success in the workplace.
Meeting Expectations
Wearing uniform correctly is one of the ranges of expectations we have at DSC. Being able to meet the expectations of an organisation you are part of is an essential life skill.
Readiness to Learn
Wearing uniform correctly is a purposeful act and one that supports students with getting into a learning focused mindset. Being in a learning focused mindset is something that happens before students get to school and should include making sure devices are charged and the correct materials are packed for the day ahead, as well as putting on their uniform and wearing it with pride.
Students are doing well with meeting our expectations around uniform, but there are a lot of students who have facial piercings. Please note that nose, lip and eyebrow piercings are not allowed and that this is going to be a big focus in semester 2. Semester 2 is over 8 weeks away. This is plenty of time for any new piercings to heal. Consequently, students will be asked to remove a facial piercing from the start of semester 2 and may be sent home if they refuse.
Employers care about uniform being worn correctly because it shows an employee cares about their business.
We care about uniform being worn correctly because wearing the correct uniform shows students care about learning.
