Music Matters
MUSIC CAMP
On Monday, 24 until Wednesday, 26 May, music students and staff will be travelling to Mt. Evelyn to Camp Oasis for our annual Music Camp. All of our large ensembles, Soundworks, Concert Band, Wind Symphony, String Orchestra, Stringworks and Senior Jazz Band will be attending. The camp is a fantastic way to fine-tune our performances for the Winter Concert on Tuesday, 1 June.
Students participate in a mix of ensemble rehearsals, sectional rehearsals and fun camp activities such as flying fox, archery, crate climb, rock climbing, candle making and visits to the reptile room. We also rehearse for our massed item and have a talent show on the last night. Great friendships and lots of fun memories are made. We are all really looking forward to being able to get away and catch up on what we missed out on last year. A huge thank you to Mrs Howes for all her tireless work organising this highlight of the Music calendar.
WINTER CONCERT
Our annual Winter Concert will be held in the Performance Centre on the evening of Tuesday, 1 June, starting at 7.00 pm. All our ensembles will be performing and all parents and friends are invited to come and hear them play. Tickets will be on sale next week through CompassTix but get in quickly as seats are limited.
GUITAR DAY
On Wednesday, 26 May, the Guitar Ensemble will be holding a guitar day to build relationships between members and to prepare for the Winter Concert. Students will develop their ensemble skills in an intensive rehearsal day which will include a pizza lunch! The event is now on Compass for parental consent for those guitar students involved.
YEAR 7 MUSIC TURBO DAY
On Thursday, 6 May, Doncaster Secondary College held a turbo day to help turbocharge the year 7 instrumental students’ skills. Students from Soundworks (Year 7 Concert Band) and Year 7 Strings participated. We spent the day doing a variety of activities that built teamwork and helped us get to know the rest of the band better. Throughout the day we learnt different things about the instruments and how to make them sound nice together. We had Wind Symphony (Senior Concert band) come and play for us too, so we got to hear how different instruments sound together when in time. At the start of the day, we did an activity to build tempo and teamwork by going into groups and getting over a line at the same time. This took a few tries, but we got there in the end. We worked on our reading music together and also learnt a tune called “C Jam Blues” from memory without any music.
We all enjoyed a pizza lunch before listening to Wind Symphony play to us. By the end of the day, SoundWorks had learnt two songs and the Year 7 Strings had too. Both songs we’d never played before that day. During period four, the rest of the year 7’s came into the Performance Centre and listened to us play. In our first piece, “Merrily We Roll Along”, we had solos from the flutes, clarinets, saxophones, trumpets trombones and bass guitar. Wind Symphony then played music from the movies “How To Train Your Dragon” and “Sing”. Year 7 strings played their two tunes “Fast Lane” and “Showdown” before we played together with Wind Symphony and the instrumental staff on “C Jam Blues”. By the end of the day, we had all learnt something new and overall had a great day.
Thank you to all the Instrumental staff, Mr Brodie on his red plastic trumpet, Mr Dean, Mr Dillon, Mr Ondaatje, Mr O’Connell, Mr Rowlands and Mr Verco for all your work to make the day such a huge success. Oh, and of course Ms Menta for organising the pizza!
