Year 9 Camp

Samantha Francis

Year Level Leader

Our Year 9 cohort enjoyed a three-day camp at YMCA Mt Evelyn in Week 5, thankfully just prior to the recent lockdown.  Students relished the opportunity to get away from the regular school environment and have a go at some new activities, whilst bonding as a Year Level Community.  The theme of the camp was ‘challenge by choice’ – encouraging students to have a go at each of the activities at a level that suited their readiness.

Favourite activities were the Giant Swing, High Ropes, Archery and Crate Stack.  Well done to Sasha Folley for being our champion archer, and Hugo Sproule and his team for the highest crate stack!  Between scheduled activities, students took advantage of the time to get to know one other better, play sports, or challenge Mr Leach (aka the Sniper), Mr Brochet and Mr Germano to a round of Ga Ga Ball.  At night, we enjoyed scrumptious meals (and desserts!) and then various group activities, including marshmallows by the fire, table tennis tournaments, card games, and a movie night.

I want to commend our Year 9 students on their exceptional conduct whilst on camp. You were brilliant representatives of Auburn High School, and our DARE values were evident in the way you conducted yourselves – especially in supporting one another through activities.

Many thanks to the camp staff at YMCA Mt Evelyn, as well as the twelve AHS staff who volunteered their time to come along.

Some reflections from our students:

I really enjoyed making new friends from my activity and cabin groups, doing the night activities, and watching the teachers try the activities.

Camp is always one of the most fun part of every year.  This year the most fun were the activities.  My favourites were the Giant Swing and the High Ropes & Low Ropes.  I'm sure that next year's Year 9's are going to love this.  Looking forward to the next year’s camp!

Year 9 Camp was really fun!  All the staff were really nice and the food wasn't as bad as I thought.  Although some of the activities were a little boring, majority of them were fun!  I was able to spend time with my friends and do some activities with them, I enjoyed Year 9 Camp.

I enjoyed camp as I got to hang out with my best friends and talk about Taylor Swift, plus the bus ride wasn't too long which was awesome.

I loved some of the activities like the Giant Swing and Low Ropes.  Also, the cabins were well spaced and had enough room to be comfortable.

I enjoyed camp because I was able to spend a lot of time with my friends, and archery was really fun as well as the Giant Swing.

At camp I really enjoyed the activities, there was a range of things I've never done before such as High Ropes and Crate Stack.  Then there were the other activities that I have done, being the Giant Swing.  The Giant Swing was personally my favourite, I was so glad I could do it again after having to wait through lock-down.
