Food Technology during Remote Learning

One of the many challenges that face both staff and students during remote learning is the dependence on devices and consequently extended screen time.

Staff in the Food Technology depart have been proactive in encouraging students, where possible and with supervision, to continue their practical cooking tasks at home. Across the board the results have been very impressive and have given students the opportunity to break away from the devices.

The following are student accounts from Ms Slykerman’s Yr 9 &10 classes

‘On Thursday 30th of July, I attempted to cook Spanakopita during our practical lesson in Year 9 Further Food.

The Spanakopita consists of spinach, feta, egg and spring onions wrapped in filo pastry to then be folded into triangles.

I was happy with my final product despite the challenges I encountered along the way. The challenges included the cook being my first time to use filo pastry, so this then created issues with how and when to unfold the frozen sheets. The lack of experience caused me to rip some sheets and use more time than expected, although I still persisted and continued. Despite all this the Spanakopita turned out very delicious and was overall a fun cook.’

‘During the 2020 second Lockdown, the Explore Food class were required to complete an assessment task surrounding Preserves. We needed to research a preserve and look at how we could turn it into a meal or product.

I created a Lamington cake filled with homemade jam and cream, this was easy to do during remote learning as all the materials and resources were available to me with the support of my parents.  With the help of my mum in the kitchen, I was able to collect all these ingredients and, as I have internet access, I was able to Google videos of chefs making Lamington cakes filled with cream and jam, I just followed their recipe into creating that product. Also with the help of my teachers, I was able to complete the theory aspect of this task in my Google Doc to gain feedback from my teachers; Miss C (pre-service teacher), Mrs Valencia and Ms Slykerman.’
