Co-curricular News

Ms Heidi Anthony

Term 3 has seen the recommencement of our Co-curricular programs, with Winter Sport, Performing Arts ensembles and our Cadet program returning. Whilst all of our programs have been slightly different to our regular offering, there has been some wonderful innovation in the way our programs are run, which is proving incredibly beneficial for skill development and a sense of friendly competition.

It has been lovely to see our Performing Arts ensembles back in action. Students and staff alike are delighted to be back making music together again. Whilst the break from performing was difficult, students have been keen to return to rehearsals and begin learning new repertoire.

Our Cadet leaders have made the most of a difficult situation. Whilst we cannot run our regular home training program, our Cadet leaders are undertaking their promotions training courses this term. Lessons are proceeding well, and students are excited to have the opportunity to gain further skills and knowledge which will help them lead the new cohort of recruits when our home training program restarts.

Internal Sports Program

This Term has seen the introduction of a Winter Sports program, which looks quite different to what we are used to. Our Netball, Hockey, Rugby, Football and Fitness programs are all being run internally. So far, the staff and students have been very much enjoying the change in program as every sport offers the opportunity to develop new skills. Our Netball girls are playing a combination of regular rules, and Fast Five netball. This has afforded them the opportunity to develop strategic thinking in the way that they play, particularly when it comes to shooting.

Our Hockey students are enjoying playing indoor Hockey, many of them for the first time. It is a very different style of play and again it is affording the students the opportunity to become more strategic and skillful in their play, especially when it comes to using the side boards. Our football students are also trying their hand (or feet!) at indoor football, or futsal. This again is a very fast game which demands greater use of skillful ball movement in a smaller space. Our Rugby students are playing for a ‘District’ with rules changing each week to allow skill development, and the opportunity to win points for their district. Due to the matches being internal, it has also given students the opportunity to develop their refereeing skills without the pressure of external participants. This has been a bonus outcome which I am sure will serve our programs well in the future. It has been wonderful to see the attitude with which the students are participating in all of these activities. It certainly is nice to have all of these co-curricular activities back up and running.
