Year 3 CurriculumNews

The Grade 3 teachers are so excited to be seeing our learners back in the classroom! We look forward to an awesome term 4!

Reading

In term 4 the grade 3 teachers are so excited to return back to face-to-face learning in the classroom. We are so proud of all the effort and dedication the grade 3 students have put towards their learning, whilst learning remotely. In reading we will be focusing on Critiquing and Analysing when looking at an array of texts and authors. We will be developing these reading skills to help us improving our comprehension skills as readers. We will also be doing an Author Study on Anthony Brown. We are going to investigate the way in which he uses languages features, images and vocabulary choices to create different effects in his writing. We will also be analysing the way illustrations help us construct meaning and interpret different forms of information when reading a variety of texts. We look forward to delving deep into our reading this term!

Writing

In writing, the students will revisit narratives, focusing on their ability to enhance their skills as creative writers. The students will be focusing on further developing their understanding of how language can be used to paint a picture in the readers mind. In particular, our rocket writers will be improving their ability to use interesting adjectives and verbs to cleverly depict their characters and settings in their story. We look forward to interesting ideas our grade 3’s come up with!

Maths

In Maths, we will begin the term with learning about 3 Dimensional shapes and Capacity. We will be exploring the various features of 3D shapes and how they can be created. We will also be looking at the ways in which we can measure, compare and order when learning about Capacity. We will also be looking at Patterns and Algebra where our learners get the chance to look at number patterns and problem solving strategies. We will then be looking at fractions and decimals and revisiting their Place Value Knowledge! We can’t wait to see our Mathematicians in action this term!

Inquiry

In term 4, we are starting a unit called ‘Have your say’. The grade 3s will be learning about democracy and the purpose of our local government and the services it provides our community. The students will be given the opportunity to consider the purpose of creating rules and laws and how it affects us and our community. Our grade 3’s will also explore processes for decision making within our community, how they can be active participants in our community and how cultural diversity and belonging to various groups help shape our identity. We look forward to providing our students with skills and knowledge that they can actively apply to their day to day lives!

Art

I am very excited to finally be working with the grade 3-4 Students in Art again for Term 4. We will be incorporating some fun activities for the students to get their creative juices flowing, starting with revising the lines skills used in Bubble writing. The grade 3 and 4 students will then revise the design principles covered throughout the year, such as lines, pattern and shape, and build on what they have learnt during remote learning and apply to new design ideas such as ‘Movement’. The students will learn the new concept of ‘Art and Movement’, and learn to create a sense of rhythm and repetition in their designs. Next the students will explore the element of 3D ‘Form’ and they will create 3D designs, using air dried clay and towards the end of the term, the students will be making crafty and creative designs to decorate for the holidays. I am really looking forward to a fun and creative time, onsite with the grade 3-4 students this term.

Chinese

Welcome back to a new term onsite at school! During term 4, grade threes and fours will be learning some reviewed topics and vocabulary, such as greetings and names for family members, to reinforce their learning. They will also expand their knowledge with new topics and phrases such as sports and action words. They will be learning communication skills such as self-introductions and introducing their family members. They will also learn about a Chinese holidays such as the Mid-Autumn Festival.

Physical Education

Welcome back athletes! I hope you used this break to refocus, set some goals and get yourselves ready for another exciting term! This term, we will start off with team building games to make sure we remember to work together. From there, we will then look at the sport of Field Hockey. Our students will combine running, hand eye co-ordination and striking. If time allows us, we will finish off the term with Bike Ed!

On your marks, get set… LET’S GO!

Science

Welcome back to school Scientists! This term with face to face learning we will be focusing on Chemistry. Chemical science is the study of the elements ( a pure substance made up of only one atom e.g. gold, oxygen hydrogen, iron silver), the compounds they form ( a chemical whose molecules contain more than one element. Compounds are made when elements join together in a chemical reaction e.g. water – water is a compound made up of two elements, hydrogen and oxygen) and the reactions they undergo. Students will explore physical changes such as changes of state and dissolving and investigate how chemical reactions result in the production of new substances. Students will recognise that all substances consist of atoms which can combine to form molecules, and chemical reactions involve atoms being rearranged and recombined to form new substances. They will explore the relationship between the way in which atoms are arranged and the properties of substances.
