Third Sunday of Advent

Rose is the liturgical color for the Third Sunday of Advent, known as Gaudete Sunday (from the Latin word meaning "rejoice ye", the first word of the introit of this Sunday); it is a pause in the penitential spirit of Advent. As such, the third candle, representing joy, is often a different color from the other three.

Advent is a time of great activity, taking us from one place to another; often overwhelming us, but also filling us with renewed energy. We unwittingly combine religious and secular activities. We end up so weary we forget what we are actually celebrating, awaiting the Light of the World.

We are all able to reflect the light that is Jesus. We still have time to slow down, take a break and devote time to getting ready and enjoying the wonderful Advent celebrations with our families. We can still be the light to shine on others for them to see Jesus, the light of the world. We shall shine lights of friendship, love, companionship, generosity, compassion and peace.

We are surrounded by joy

Though Advent is a penitential season, we’re surrounded by joy. As we journey through this season, we empty ourselves of the extra and unneeded and find ourselves open to be filled by and with Jesus himself.

Joy becomes more than just a happy feeling or a warm fuzzy. It becomes a destination and a commitment we make. As the Holy Spirit becomes a more comfortable companion to us, we find that joy is a place we share.

Joy does not equal happiness, but it takes time to realize that and appreciate it for the gift it is. We have to learn to cooperate with God’s grace in our lives, to be able to touch the joy that is as part of us as the air we breathe.
