Student Exchange 2022 Nossal High School & MacRobertson Girls' High School

On the August 25, a small group of year nine and year ten Nossal High School students were fortunate to experience a day at MacRobertson Girls’ High School as part of the MacRob-Nossal 2022 Student Exchange Program. The MacRobertson Girls' High School (also known simply as MacRob or MGHS) is a government girls-only secondary school, located in the Melbourne CBD, Victoria.

As a SENS (select entry network of schools) exchange program, both the student representatives from MacRobertson Girls’ High School and Nossal High School worked together to collaborate and create a program for students from both schools to take part in ‘the day in the life’ at another selective school. While some students at Nossal had the chance to host a fellow MacRob student, I alongside nine others had the opportunity to travel to the city and visit the MacRob site.

We commenced our day with a train ride to South Yarra, followed by a tram ride and a brief walk. When we arrived at the school, we were immediately met with embracing smiles and a warm welcome! We were allocated some time to meet with our host buddy for the day before we were ushered into the typical school day with the rest of virtually a thousand students!

Learning at MacRob in many aspects was quite similar to the education taught at Nossal. In some ways however, it was delivered in a slightly different manner. The key takeaways were that classrooms were smaller with slighter class sizes and only one teacher while year nine and ten classes at Nossal are generally consisting of a larger group of students and are team-taught. Further, the timings for the school are also distinct, with MacRob typically having a six or seven period day of 45-minute periods plus transition time in between, with school beginning at 8:30 am. While both Nossal and MacRob observe an analogous learning structure, it was intriguing to see how differently they both successfully work.

Additionally, throughout our time there, we were fortuitous to see multiple interschool competitions between students of MacRob and students from Melbourne High, in events such as debating, chess and also netball. It was amazing to see how supportive both of the schools are and the remarkable sportsmanship between the students.

All around, this was an extraordinary day that we spent understanding more about how other schools operate. It was an incredible occasion that I and I am sure the others who experienced will cherish, as the friendships and bonds we formed that day, were some of the best ones. We would like to sincerely thank the Nossal High School SRC, MacRob SRC as well as Ms Harrap, Ms Ward and Ms De Zylva for making this day possible.
