Grade Six

Every Grade 6 student is looking forward to their last few weeks of Primary School. Term 4 is jam packed with fun activities and events to come including the Grade 6 graduation at the end of the year.

Interschool Sports is a major highlight of this term. Students represent the school and compete in the following summer sports; Volleystars, Cricket, Basketball, Rounders and Softball. Playing against other schools allows students to step out of their comfort zone and to increase teamwork and communication.

In English, students have been writing narratives. We have been discussing the different genres and types of narratives as well as how to structure one. Reading books in class and evaluating them has helped us understand storytelling.

In Maths, students have been learning about fractions, decimals and percentages. Each of us has drawn a rug with different coloured squares. Students had to calculate what the fractions were of each colour and convert them into decimals, percentages and equivalent fractions. But the main focus this term was the Ice-Cream Inventor Unit. We all had to make a survey with our own ice-cream flavours we created and survey the junior to senior school on what flavour they preferred. After the numbers were tallied up, we then had to calculate what flavour got the most votes evenly shared between, how many girls and boys liked it as well as junior, middle, and senior school so that everyone could enjoy the chosen flavour. Figuring out the profit, the money spent on ingredients and discounts was all pretty difficult but it gave the Grade 6s a real challenge! Then, the Grade 6s voted for the winners so they could actually sell their ice-cream. On the day of the sale, everyone had a wonderful time eating a fan favourite dessert! We raised $578 which will be split between Save the Children and Tangaroa Blue Charities.

This year's dance production has been an absolute hit! The theme this year was ‘Let’s Get Loud Oatlands’ implying the fact that for a few years, we’ve been in lockdown, social distancing. Now that we’re back at school, it’s time to get loud! All grades did a fabulous job of dancing. The grade 6s is always one people look forward to as well as the staff dance which everyone clapped along to the beat.

There are a lot of upcoming events this term! Bear making, which is on the 21st of November, is when students begin to create a stuffed bear for all the special teachers, helpers and fellow classmates to sign so they can remember them forever! Coach Approach is on the 23rd of November. On this day, all students play unique and interesting sports for an entire day! And on the 12th of December, students have their grade 6 graduation followed by the graduation lunch on the 15th of December.

Grade 6 is full of amazing activities and memories that will last a lifetime. I don’t think any of the students will forget spending their Grade 6 life at Oatlands Primary School because it has truly been an unforgettable experience
