Grade 5/6
When it rains, it pours........
It certainly has been a very wet start to term 4. Unfortunately, our bike ed river ride has had to be pushed back to a time when the path is safe for all to ride on and enjoy. A more favorable forecast is expected for next week, so fingers crossed. Please stay tuned for the new date to be announced. The past couple of weeks has been fantastic learning about the importance of bike maintenance, road rules, helmets and using your gears.
The cricket team has also had to postpone their match against Doncaster Gardens PS until next Monday (7th November). Best of luck to the team.
In other news, lots of great learning has been taking place in our classrooms:
LITERACY
In reading, we have been learning all about the trials and tribulations of Jamal and his sister Bibi in the book Boy Overboard. Students have been using reading strategies such as text connections, visualizing, compare and contrast and literal and inferential comprehension about life through the eyes of these characters who live in very challenging conditions in Afghanistan and their dream to play soccer in Australia.
In writing, we have been working on the structure of various types of poems. These have included Ballads Preposition, Dimante and Limericks. Students have also begun writing either a speech for leadership positions for next year (Year 5) or a reflection of their time at ACPS (Year 6).
NUMERACY
This term we have been looking at the concepts of probability and chance. Students investigated the likelihood of outcomes of activities with dice and also sport equipment such as throwing a ball into a bucket or shooting a basketball goal. Students have also learnt about different forms of measurement including volume, capacity and mass. One activity involved students determining the amount pens it would take to cover the surface area of a table. Students worked on a formula to calculate the final total.
INQUIRY
Students have been researching about Australia's immigration history and how it has impacted our country. The quote 'populate or perish' was one such example we looked at and why it was so important that Australia welcomed immigrants from other countries. Students have looked at percentages of different countries that have migrated to Australia while also choosing a famous or well-known person who has moved to Australia. For example, a number of AFL football players or artists such as Anh Do. Students have researched their background, why they moved to Australia and what difference it has made to their life.
