Senior VCAL Excursion to the Sacred Heart Mission

The first of four groups of our Senior VCAL students (Tia, Aleksi, Luka and Tyler) accompanied by Miss Blake went out to the Sacred Heart Mission dining hall in St Kilda to feed the homeless last Tuesday. We arrived in St Kilda at 9 am to help the SHM staff during their breakfast and lunch period. We started by prepping and cutting all the ingredients up for the following day’s lunch service. We were given a meal during our lunch break before we started serving lunch to the clients. The lunch service was quite challenging and we were given a range of roles including serving hot food, greeting clients, serving tea/coffee, cleaning tables and dishes and supporting the ongoing volunteers. After lunch, we helped the volunteers with a huge clean down of all the tables, chairs, floor and serving tables. This is done every day with chemicals, hot soapy water and scrubbing brushes then dried with towels. Overall the day at Sacred Heart dining hall was challenging, however eye-opening and rewarding to have the opportunity help out our homeless community.

Over the next month, 3 more groups of students from VCAL will be volunteering their time with the Sacred Heart Mission.
