Term 2, Week 5

Home Learning

Home Learning

We want to acknowledge the time and effort the students and their families are putting into helping us make this work. We know this a challenging time and we are impressed with the quality of work being produced.  In each subject area, there are opportunities for extension tasks, which the students can access. This is either extra tasks, or accessing other websites and programs. We will continue to provide more opportunities for optional extension tasks as the term progresses - for example the Optional Extras grid, which has been sent out the last couple of weeks.

GOOGLE MEET SESSIONS:

Information about your child's Google Meet sessions will be posted on their individual class Google Classrooms. We have adjusted the timetable to include extra sessions this week, but they may be in a different order to last week, to help best support the students' learning.

DAILY REFLECTIONS:

At the end of each day, we have asked the students to reflect on their work for that day. This will be through the Google Classroom and teachers will be using this information to help mark the school roll, to ensure all students are engaging with home learning tasks. If possible, please remind your child to complete this task. We  recommend setting an alarm reminder for 2:45pm.

English

Reading

This week, we will be reading Chapter 6 of Running Wild. BEFORE READING the chapter, students are going to predict what will happen in the chapter. They will then read the chapter and reflect on their predictions. Just like previous weeks, the students will then complete a word study related to vocabulary from the chapter. From now on, they only need to complete work for four vocab words.

Writing

Over the coming weeks, student will consolidate their knowledge of information texts by researching, planning and writing one of their own. This week has a heavy focus on research skills. Students will learn all about sources and ways to determine if a source is credible or misleading. Taking time to explicitly teach research skills is an investment we believe will pay off for students for years to come. This week, we will start by exploring the difference between primary and secondary sources.

Write2Read Codes

Students will continue to practice 30 "codes" of the English language through watching videos uploaded by their class teacher. They will also begin to explore a reading or spelling rule which will help them when they decode or write words. There are 30 rules that students will gradually explore through their primary schooling. A rule is introduced through an explicit lesson on a Monday and then a "bootcamp" begins where the students practice the new skill or information over a period of 2 weeks until it becomes "automatic" in their brains.

We have reduced some of the expectations of Reading and Writing tasks to provide 15-20mins for the students to work on their rules each day.

Mathematics

This week Grade 6 will be learning to use reasoning to complete a problem solving task. Mathematical reasoning is the critical skill that enables students to make use of all other mathematical skills. With the development of mathematical reasoning, students will be able recognise that mathematics makes sense and can be understood.

Access to additional Mathematics work can be found through Mathletics and students can continue to work through their personal goals using My Numeracy.

Unit of Inquiry

Students will begin looking at the effective steps needed learn and to teach new skills. Students will write down the 7 golden rules from the video, ‘How to master a skill,' in their Unit of Inquiry book. Students will research a new skill of their choice and the correct steps to perform that skill. Students will teach their new skill to someone in their house. Students will record themselves, explaining and performing the new skill.

Contact

We encourage and celebrate student voice in Grade 6. If students have any concerns or questions, they can comment or post on either the whole cohort or individual class Google Classrooms. Teachers receive notifications when students post and will respond when possible. Students should also communicate questions and ideas relating to learning with each other using the two Google Classrooms. This will keep them connected and allow them to see each other's progress.

If you have any questions or concerns, please email your child’s teacher through compass.

Reminders

Children must have Google Classroom notifications turned on to ensure they are receiving communications from their classroom teacher and their peers. It would be useful if students checked the Google Classroom each day, both in the morning and again in the afternoon, to see if new information or tasks have been added.

Specialist Team

The Specialist team will be organising tasks for the students through their iNewsletter which can be accessed from here or the link the Specialists will send out each week.

Please contact Mrs Travis or Mrs Goosey if you have any questions.

Hearing Unit

Parents of Hearing Unit students, please continue to refer to your child’s weekly HU program. Please contact your child’s Teacher of the Deaf with any queries.
