Performing Arts - Thursday

Hi Grade 3s,

For the work in today’s lesson you’ll just need your notebook (or paper) and a pencil to write with. You’ll also need to be ready to do some funny things with your bodies!

Task 1: To warm-up, we’re going to start by doing something called ‘The Magic String’ exercise. I want you to imagine you have a piece of invisible string that you can attach to different parts of your body, and the string will pull those parts forward.

Attach the magic string to these different body parts and move around your space:

  • Head
  • Nose
  • Chest
  • Tummy
  • Hips
  • knees
  • Toes/feet

As you move around, think about what kind of character you are.

What kind of person might lead with each different body part? (e.g. an old person might lead with their head as they are hunched over; a king or queen might lead with their noses out as they move in a regal manner).

Think:

How does the rest of your body change as you lead with different parts?

Who is your character?

Where are they?

How are they feeling?

Use the answers to these questions to help you show a clear character and their movement (you don’t need to write answers to these questions).

Task 2: Write down what character you came up with for each body part that you attached your Magic String to.

Think: Which body part might your own monologue character lead with?

Now we need to start putting everything together!

Over the last few weeks we’ve thought about WHO our character is. What their COSTUME and STAGE MAKE-UP might look like. We’ve also thought about their VOICE, GESTURE, POSTURE, MANNERISMS and GAIT.

Task 3: Think about your monologue character:

Sit somewhere comfortable with your eyes closed. Think about all the details you’ve created for your character.

Picture them in your imagination: What do they look like? What do they sound like? How do they move?

Once you have a clear picture in your mind, stand up as your character then stand up and walk around. Pretend to greet others as your character (greet the furniture if you like!) so that you can practice their voice.

Remember: You’ll know you’ve succeeded when you can show a clear use of gesture, posture, gait, mannerisms, you are in character (not just moving as yourself), and you have thought about how you are using your voice (again, it should be a character’s voice, not yours).

Task 4: Now you need to start thinking about what your character might say. What are all the things that your character might do in a day, from waking up to going to sleep? What might they get up to? Start to write your ideas/ some notes down in your notebook.

Over the next two weeks: you are going to use your ideas from today to start writing a ‘day in the life of’ monologue for your character. Once you have your monologue written, you’ll be able to practice until you’re ready to put on your monologue performance!
