From the Principal

From Mr Torpey

We acknowledge the Traditional Owners of the land on which our school stands,

the Wurundjeri people of the Kulin Nation.

Dear Families and Friends,

Thank you

It’s hard to believe that another year is almost over and it certainly feels great to be part of St Justin’s community, made easier by a number of people. Again, a “big thank you” to all our students, parents and carers for your continued support throughout this year.

A huge thank you to Fr Andrew and all the staff at St Justin’s – they are committed professionals who aim to provide the very best in education. It is these people who help our students grow, leading by example, pushing with encouragement or walking beside with support. I thank them for the care, guidance and support that they give to each and every student. I also thank the School Advisory Council, the Parents and Friends Committee, the Fair on the Hill Committee and the various sub committees for the amazing work they do in helping to support such a wonderful community. Your dedication, encouragement and hard work is appreciated by all.

Thank you also to the families leaving our school, some after a very long and happy association with St Justin’s Primary School. We wish them well and thank them for their contributions. Remember, you are still a valued member of the St Justin’s Parish and the door is always open.

Thanks everyone for your prayers and encouragement throughout the year. St Justin’s is certainly more than buildings, curriculum, meetings, fundraising and working bees. It is a community rich in love, support and a genuine concern for others.

We wish you all a happy and holy Christmas and a safe summer holiday.

Farewell

At our end of Year Mass today, we farewelled two of our staff members who are leaving us for a short period of time - Mrs Herbison and Mrs Wickens.

Mrs Herbison has been seconded by Melbourne Archdiocese Catholic Schools (MACS) to take on an Acting Principal's position at St Michael's Primary School, Ashburton for the 2023 school year. Whilst we are sad to say farewell (even if only for a short time), we wish Mrs Herbison all the very best - I could think of no one better to lead a community in such a challenging time.  As we know, Mrs Herbison is a very experienced educational leader and educator and I know that St Micheal's will benefit from her experience, knowledge, commitment and understanding in such a challenging time.

Mrs Wickens will also commence Maternity Leave at the commencement of 2023, as her and her husband, Michael, are expecting a little baby boy in January. We thank Mrs Wickens for her dedication, commitment and passion for education and wich her and Michael all the best for the safe arrival of baby boy Wickens.

Dear Families,

I would like to take this opportunity to say thank you to all for your generosity of spirit in these last few days, with the amazing well wishes I have received. It has been a huge privilege and a pleasure to work with the staff, students and families here at St Justin's. I could not have asked for a more wonderful community. Thank you for what you have taught me and for the many wonderful conversations and catch ups at the school gate, especially over the COVID years! What a time that was. I wish you all every happiness for 2023 and I know you are in excellent hands with Leanne Snell taking on the Deputy Principal role, along with the whole leadership team. A merry and holy Christmas to you all.

Start of the 2023 School Year

Next year staff will officially commence school on Friday 28th January. Again, we will again use the first two student days (Monday 31st January 2022 and Tuesday 1st February 2022) of the school year for each student to have a 30-minute one-on-one session with their teacher. Not only does it allow classroom teachers to undertake various individual assessments with each student, but also provides an opportunity for each child to “check in” with his or her teacher before the school year begins, becoming more familiar with the classroom and the teacher.

Families were notification via email on Wendesday and again on Thursday of how to make a booking.

Building Works

Over the holidays, work will continie at St Justins, including:

  • refurbishemnt of the four junior classrooms,
  • replacement of the retaining wall,
  • redevelop and refurbish the portable classrooms,
  • Reinforcing the Undercover Area, and
  • Rectify the drainage issue at the back of the oval

At this stage, we are still on track to have access to all areas by the commencement of the 2023 school year, except for the poratbles, which should be completed by the end of February.

Beginning 2023 school year

In 2023, staff will officially commence the year on Friday 27th January. As we have organised in the past, the first two "student days" will be set aside for Teacher-Student Meets. These two days will be:

  1. MONDAY 30TH JANUARY -
  2. TUESDAY 31ST JANUARY

On one of these days, each student will have an allocated time for a 30-minute one-on-one session with their classroom teacher. This allows classroom teachers to undertake some individual assessments with each student and additionally provides an opportunity for each student to "check in" with his or her teacher before the school year begins. This enables connection to start between the student and their teacher.

Details for booking your student in for a session on one of these two days will be made available through an email to you next week.
