Dear Families,
Holiday fever is creeping in, but the Junior School haven't slowed down just yet! From excursions to liturgies, firefighter visits and Christmas concert practices; the last two weeks have been jam packed with fun and learning.
Excitement has been at an all time high this week as some cheeky elves from the North Pole arrived in our classrooms Thursday morning. We can't wait to see the mischief these guys get up to.
Check out our future Firefighter's on our instagram.
On Thursday the Junior school had their Advent liturgy. Student's listened to Luke's Gospel about the birth of Jesus, participated in prayers of the faithful and sang songs. Thank you to the parents who joined us for this special morning.
Last Friday (a.k.a. The Best Day Ever!) the
Preps attended their very first excursion to the wonderful Museum of Play and Art in Sandringham. Lunch at the park followed by sensory, immersive and play-based learning experiences. Just take a look at some of the fun.
Multisensory Literacy
In Prep we have been learning a new spelling rule; the Rabbit Rule. In a two syllable word we double the middle consonant sound after a short vowel, like in the words kitten and happy. If you came into our classroom during our MSL time, you wouldn't believe that you were standing in a Prep classroom. The students are absolutely incredible.
In Number students have been looking at Australian coins. Through games students learned to recognise coins and their particular features, experimented with making collections up to 50c and exchanged money for goods in our very own toy shop.
In Measurement and Geometry, Students have been exploring 3D objects. We have loved singing the 3D shapes song at the beginning of our lessons. We made cubes using sticks and play-dough and counted sides, corners and faces. We also went on a shape hunt around our school.
For our 'Creativity' topic, the Preps created their own musical instruments. After brainstorming different kinds of instruments (ones we blow into, ones we shake, ones we strum etc.) the students set to work on planning a design for their very own instrument. Using cardboard tubes, cups, containers, icy pole sticks, pasta, beads, pipe cleaners and lots (and lots) of sticky tape; students created their very own orchestra complete with a string, percussion and wind ensemble. Of course, we had to put our instruments to the test and play along to our favourite song!
The 1/2's were the envy of the school last Friday as they headed off on their excursion to LegoLand where they enjoyed 4D movies, rides and had the opportunity to attend a Lego masterclass.
The 1/2's are still kicking goals when it comes to our structured literacy approach. We have been focusing on the 'I saw paul' spelling rule where 'au' and 'aw' make the /au/ sound like in the words paw and faucet. Students are beginning to recognise that when l, n, or k follows the sound at the end of the word, we use 'aw'.
The 1/2's had their first camp experience yesterday with the 1's coming back to school for games and pizza and the 2's continuing to sleepover at school. This was some students first ever experience of staying away from home! Lets just say that some slept and some didn't!!! The students were all amazing and enjoyed this new experience. Thanks to all the teachers that stayed to help and to those who stayed over. They will definitely enjoy their well deserved weekend.
Students were busy this week putting their ideas for Michael into fruition. Following their design plans from last week, students created mazes, food puzzles and houses for our beloved class pet. We are in the final stages of the design process and we look forward to seeing our students present their creations next week.
What a lucky Rabbit. Well done 1/2's!
Students brought in their Nativity scenes this week. We were blown away by the effort and creativity involved. We really appreciate the support from parents to help their child complete this homework task. Such a beautiful rich learning task.
