English and Whole School Literacy

This semester has been a busy one for all of us. Below is an overview of what we have been doing in our mainstream English classrooms.

Reading/comprehending texts and writing/composing texts are the core skills that we teach however, fundamental to these skills is knowledge and understanding of how to make meaning. As our students grow into young adults, it is essential that we equip them with the skills to understand how meaning is made. This is the fundamental component of literacy and a core skill that we all need in everyday life.

As our students embark on a well - deserved break, please remember that literacy skills are like any other skills – kicking, cooking, driving etc. They need plenty of opportunity to practice their skills in order to improve them - reading, writing and meaning making is no different!

Have a safe and happy holiday,
