Our school has been selected to participate in the collection of assessment data for The Arts - Visual Arts to support the assessment of Victoria’s Education State targets.
The Education State targets set out the Government’s commitment to more students reaching the highest levels of achievement in the Arts. This target highlights the importance of arts excellence, and recognises that embedding a culture that values achievement in the arts will help Victoria achieve its goals for better learning and life outcomes for all students.
A representative sample of student work in Years 6 and 10 across Victoria have been invited to participate in the Arts assessments in 2018 across different Arts disciplines. Our school has been selected to participate in Visual Arts at Year 10 level.
For the Visual Arts assessments, student art work and accompanying written responses from 2018 will be used as part of the assessments. No additional tasks will be required. Student artwork will simply be assessed on-site at the school by a pair of fully qualified Arts assessors on a pre-designated day during Week 2 this term.
Individual student data will only be used in the set up and administration of the tasks. All performance data collected will be de-identified and individual student names will not be stored with corresponding data. The data will be aggregated and reported on across the state as a whole, as a benchmark of excellence in The Arts. No schools or individual students will be compared or reported on as part of this process. Students will receive a certificate of participation as a token of appreciation from the VCAA for being part of the program.
If you have any questions or concerns or do not want your child to participate in the collection of anonymous student assessment data in The Arts, please contact the school to discuss further.

The Mathematics Association of Victoria run a Mathematics Camp for Year 10 students each year. Several of our students were encouraged to apply again this year. Tess Dempsey was selected as one of 24 students from rural and regional Victoria to attend the five-day camp during the holiday. This is a report on her experiences:
The camp involved us being split into 5 groups: Engineering, ICT, Commerce and 2 Bioscience groups. Each group was partnered with an industry and a company mentor and were assigned a group project that had to be completed over the 5 days.
Each day we had a site visit to each of the 4 companies. On Tuesday, we went to the Victorian Space Science Education Centre, where we completed multiple activities and research aspects that determine who can go to space. On Wednesday, we went to Ford and experienced Virtual Reality showing the Ford Ranger, and a task related to designing parts of a car. On Thursday, we went to the Reserve Bank of Australia, where there was a presentation about economics, as well as visiting Biarri, an IT Company. On Friday, we had a tour of Latrobe University, then we presented our projects to the group, families and industry mentors.
Every night we were allocated time to work on our projects at RMIT, as well as the State Library on Thursday. We also had other night activities, such as a maths relay, BOUNCE, the Queen Vic night market, and a presentation from Norman Do about maths.
This was an amazing opportunity to see how maths is applied and is relevant in the workplace, to help us make decisions about our future studies, and to make new friends and memories that will last for a lifetime.
