Boys Cricket News

I can announce that Mr. Steve Mirtschin – Year 4 teacher – is our new Head of Boys cricket for the upcoming season. We thank Mr. Phil Sanders for his efforts during the last three seasons in this role and he will continue with the cricket program as a coach.

Steve is a Level Two qualified cricket coach, has held senior and junior coaching positions in the past and is currently involved in the Western Waves pathway for Cricket Victoria. He is excited about the opportunity and has many great initiatives and ideas he plans to see implemented at the school and the relationship with the College Cricket Club over the coming years.

We have had very strong interest in all junior age groups as well as senior cricket for the upcoming season so stay tuned in the coming weeks for more information from Mr. Mirtschin about training dates, coaches and start of season dates. Information for our youngest cricketers about MILO/IN2 Cricket program and girls cricket will also be coming soon.

Student News

Congratulations to Year 9 student Jack Sharp who competed in the 'The Victorian Country Short Course Championships' at Wangaratta on the weekend and finished with a bronze in 100m Freestyle and 200m Freestyle. The times he made in both events qualifies him for the Victorian State Open Short Course Championships.

The remainder of his events were also Personal Bests, and he even made the Victorian State Age qualification time for 100m Breaststroke. In the 100m Butterfly he was 0.3 secs off a bronze medal and 0.01 secs off the qualifying time for the Vic Open so hopefully he will get these qualifying times at future events.

Well done Jack!

Football News

All roads lead to Melville Oval on this Friday night to support the College Magpies Under 16 side as they take on St Mary’s/Kokoda in the grand final beginning at 7.30pm. It would be great to see lots of support for the boys as they hope to cap off a successful season with a premiership.

The Under 13s unfortunately could not get past the strong St Mary’s team in their preliminary final last Sunday, going down fighting by 6 goals. Skipper Michael Crowle led from the front and the ever-determined Jack Austin also won lots of the ball but the end of the season came for the team. Other better players in the finals series included Jock Barrie and Lachlan Rees.

The season will wrap up on Sunday night at Alexandra House with the presentation night. All players and families are encouraged to get along from 6pm to enjoy each other’s company and reminisce about the season.

DIVISION ONE WOMEN’S  HOCKEY

Our two B Grade sides met for the final time on Sunday afternoon. Once again it was the Scorchers who were too strong defeating the Blades 2-0. The Blades certainly had their opportunities and were the better side for much of the match, they simply couldn’t convert! Di Austin played her best game of the season and Annabelle Mould worked tirelessly for the Blades.

In atrocious conditions last Friday night the College A Grade Strikers defeated Coleraine Red 3-2. It was so cold holding the stick was a feat in itself. Well done to Millie Dopheide who scored her first goal of the season. With only one round remaining the Strikers will finish on top of the A Grade ladder. Well done to Pete Musson on his great work with this side.

The A Grade Thundersticks had a real battle on their hands against bottom of the table Coleraine Black. Coleraine Black held a 1-0 lead mid way through the second half until the College forward line finally got into gear. Phoebe Sweeney and Gracie Austin were amongst the better players. Well done to Emily Ash and Nikita Cavill both playing their first A Grade game and were also amongst the better players.

The Division One Men were too strong for Demons recording an excellent 6-1 win. Led by captain Thomas Verco the boys took total control in the second half. Tom Bunge was just superb down the right wing and he was very well supported by Liam McMaugh and Lachie Holcombe. The Division One Men will finish the home and away season safely on top of the ladder and take some excellent form into the finals.

College Gold

College Gold came away with a win against College Blue, the score was 4-2. Our defence was strong despite strong attacking play from College Blue, with Marcus Munro playing superbly in goals and our back line played well. Reagan Simons and Dougal Sweeney scored two goals each, and dominated during the game. Will Merrin and Jack Austin combined well on wing, and Zac Cunningham played well with Jock Adamson on the forward line. Well done to the entire team.

College Strikers v Coleraine Reds

Strikers confirmed their place at the top of the table as league winners on a very cold and wet Friday night with a 3:2 win. In conditions that suited a hard hitting Coleraine, Strikers were forced to work steadfastly after an early goal from Coleraine, but came back with a well worked short corner from Hannah R and good positioning from wingers Skye, Millie (1) and Olivia (1) to lead 3:2. Coleraine were always going to attack hard as were fighting for a finals spot, but mid fields Erin, Maddi and Izzy gave 100% throughout the game. Chloe A, Abbey, Ruby and Chloe R defended well. (thanks Chloe A for putting off your trip to Adalaide for the sake of your team) A great team effort was rounded off by Claire in goals and Shayleigh being a great versatile player.
