VICTORIAN PREMIERS’ READING CHALLENGE

Last call – last week for entering data!  All books need to be logged by the end of next week, and I need a parent to tell me that the books have been read so that I can verify them. I also need to know whether the student’s name can be published on the Honour Roll. This advice can be sent via a note in the diary for the class teacher to pass on, an email to me: msimkin@hamiltoncollege.vic.edu.au or a phone call to me. Whatever the end results are, it is so important to keep on reading!

COLD WAR BREAKOUTEDU WITH YEAR 10 HISTORY

This week the Library staff have assisted Mrs Ogle with a different type of learning experience. Students worked in teams to unlock three different boxes containing activities and information relating to the Cold War. One lock was opened by cracking the right word, one required a key, which was issued once a complete ticket was handed to the teacher, and one required the correct numbers deduced from a cryptic clue that led to a date. It is interesting watching the way students solve the problems, and often the best results are obtained by those who may not generally excel with typical written exercises. In addition to content students learn how to apply critical thinking and collaborate, both useful skills for real life. You can see more here.

CBCA BOOK WEEK

It’s the time of year when the winners are announced, and we are generally pleased to see the books that won for 2017. The full list can be viewed here.   We have all titles with our collection – some are held in both Junior and Senior Branches and others just at the best branch in terms of readers mastering the content.

The Senior School is celebrating this year’s theme of Escape to Everywhere by solving a locked chain puzzle to release the books from their display. One padlock has been opened at the time of writing – one of the direction locks, which in some ways are the hardest!

At the Junior School, Year 5 students will escape from their classroom to lead another class through a relevant activity for this week’s Library lesson. The students have worked hard to design a lesson, practice reading the selected book, and ordering the necessary supplies from Mrs Cameron. This should be a lot of fun for all concerned.

Book Week prizes will be drawn next week – this year our regular borrowers have been entered in the draw!

Social Media Platforms and Your Career - A Learning Opportunity Requested by Mrs Manifold

There will be sessions on this topic this week. Staff and students in Years 10 – 12 are invited to learn about developing a positive digital footprint. This session will run three times this week: Wednesday Lunchtime (23rd August at 1.15) Thursday (24th August at 3.45) after school, and Friday Lunchtime (25th August at 1.15). It will cover Twitter and LinkedIn specifically and is aimed at senior students and adults (parents welcome - please sign in at reception before joining us in the Library). The session will be 30 minutes maximum although the after school session may go longer if attendees are interested. If there is further demand more sessions may be arranged.

It is possible to create a short film of the presentation if people are unable to attend. Please let me know if you are interested – and apologies to any parents who could have come with more notice.
