Year 10 Work Experience

YEAR 10 WORK EXPERIENCE 2019

Year 10 students completed work experience in May which is an integral part of the curriculum.

There have been many positive outcomes from work experience with students being offered part-time work as a result of their placements and the exploration of possible future career pathways.

Students have also gained a better understanding of the requirements of employers and the workforce and have returned to school with renewed enthusiasm and motivation.

Work experience positions covered a broad spectrum of job areas including marketing, hospitality, retail, childcare, teaching, sport and fitness and various trade areas.

We were very impressed with the manner in which students conducted themselves in the workplace and they should be congratulated on their fine achievements.

We would also like to take this opportunity to thank the staff members of Greensborough College who visited students on work experience. The dedication shown by staff is an important factor in ensuring that the work experience program is a successful and worthwhile experience for all students involved.

From the 13th -17th of May, I attended Mill Park Physiotherapy for my work experience. I really enjoyed the experience as it gave me very good insight into what a day in the life of a physiotherapist is like. During the week I watched a few very small treatments just to get a little taste of what it’s like inside the consulting rooms. I also watched some of the different gym classes that were running. As well as the visual part of the experience I also did a little bit of theory which involved completing a few different work sheets on areas that related to physiotherapy. This really helped me develop a good understanding of different things related to that area of work.

Work experience was an amazing opportunity for me to understand and comprehend more about work life. I worked at a Childcare Centre in South Morang, where I spent my week interacting with children. Overall it was an amazing opportunity and I’m happy that I was involved in it.

Hi I’m Catherine, I’d like to tell you a little about my work experience. I had a great week at Urban Grooves Cafe in Greensborough, where I met a lot of people. I was welcomed straight away, which was really good as I was a bit nervous. I learnt so many different things in hospitality, including customer service, preparing tables, working in a team environment and working under pressure. The owner Emmanuel was extremely supportive, which made my work experience enjoyable. Even though at times I was exhausted, the time went fast. For me work experience at Urban Grooves was a positive experience, as I was able to learn new things & build my confidence.

For my work experience, I went to my old primary school: Watsonia Heights Primary School. I originally chose to complete my work experience there because I left it a little last minute, and it was a place I felt very comfortable going back to, as all the staff are so lovely and kind. I absolutely loved doing my work experience there, I did not expect to love it as much as I did. Before, I never thought of primary teaching as a conceivable career option for myself, but after only a week of interacting and helping kids in classrooms, it changed my whole perspective and I definitely see it as an option for me in the future.

The kind of tasks I would do varied a lot each day, so I was never bored. I always had things to do and I thoroughly enjoyed doing them. I would help out in all different classes and year levels. I went into sport classes, science, art, maths, reading, writing and also assisted kids when they were doing their NAPLAN. I spent a lesson with a Grade 3/4 class in science, and I helped them research natural disasters and was able to teach them new things which I really loved being a part of. If I had free time, I would help out staff with organising rooms or assisting in class activities. It felt very rewarding to me that I was able to help kids in their learning and impart some of my knowledge on them, and I really hope it helped them. Overall, I think doing work experience was so worthwhile and beneficial for me as it opened my eyes to possible opportunities for myself that I wasn’t aware I had a genuine interest in.

Emma.
