Book Week
Today staff and students got into the spirit as we celebrated Book Week 2019! Staff and students looked brilliant in their Book Week costumes. Thank you to Digital Technologies teacher, Haylee Godfrey for organising such a great celebration of reading in the Primary School.
The staff pantomime was a highlight of the Book Week assembly. Well done to Georgia Smithson and Amelia Gauchie who prepared the script. It was creative and weaved in our themes of caring for each other, regulating our emotions and mindfulness. Year 4 teacher, James Tsironis was indeed awesome as Mr Awesome and his sidekick Year 5 teacher, Luke Basson was most helpful in prompting positive psychology interventions. Our Class Representatives confidently ran the assembly and the Year 12 Prefects thoroughly enjoyed dressing up for their younger peers. Thank you to all our parents and grandparents for making such a fine effort with all the costumes. Our students looked amazing!
The super hero buddy reading sessions were a success and the effort made by all staff and students is an indication of the great culture in our school.
Year 3 and 4 Speakers’ Challenge – Wesley College
A number of students recently competed in the Years 3 and 4 Speakers' Challenge. The Speakers' Challenge is a non-compulsory event. Each student must write their own speech, on any topic, to a length of approximately four minutes. The first and second place winners from the School competition are chosen to attend the IPSHA Year 3 and 4 Speakers’ Challenge at Wesley College, this year being Year 4 students Alexis Hennett and Mulder Le Vaillant.
The IPSHA Speakers’ Challenge for 2019 was held on Tuesday 13 August at Wesley College. 30 students spoke on the night on incredibly varied topics. Alexis presented her speech, Gender Equality and Mulder presented his entitled First World Problems, with incredible confidence and excellent presentation skills.
Their speeches were informative and wonderfully entertaining. Both Mulder and Alexis have worked incredibly hard to learn their speeches, brush up on their presentation skills and develop a stage presence. We achieved wonderful results for the evening with Alexis receiving a bronze medallion and Mulder receiving a gold medallion in the first rounds.
Mulder went on to present his speech in the main Auditorium in front of six adjudicators receiving a silver medal overall. Well done to both students!
Stephanie Alexander Garden Kitchen Project
The Stephanie Alexander Garden Kitchen Project is well underway with students busy planting new garden beds and tending to their vegetables. This project has been adopted by several schools around WA and has proven to be an excellent program to educate students about food production, nutrition, preparation and environmental sustainability. The John Wollaston Parents and Friends Association (P&F) have kindly donated $8,000 towards establishing the gardens. This donation is being used to fund equipment including raised garden beds, soil, fertiliser, compost bins, bins for food scraps, seedlings and garden tools.
Year 6 Transition to Year 7
Some of the Year 7s provided a talk to the Year 6s recently to help prepare them for their transition into Year 7. The Year 7s talked about their experience and provided tips and advice to the Year 6s about the transition and the differences with moving into the Secondary School. The talks are aimed at giving the Year 6s more confidence as they transition over.
All the best.
