Year 5/6 News

Welcome...

The Year 5/ 6 staff would like to welcome all of our students, both new and returning to what we envisage, will be a fabulous and productive year of learning.  We are especially excited at the prospect of preparing our Year Six students for their secondary education next year. In addition we have one pre service teacher, Lola who will be working with Miss Johnstone for the next five weeks.

Students have settled quickly into their new classrooms and specialist programs have commenced. We will be announcing House, Korean and Art captains as well as Junior School Council representitives in the next few weeks. Students will be notified and badges distributed at our next Senior Assembly.

Our Integrated topic for this term is ‘Setting Up For Success’. Students have been involved in establishing classroom expectations and goal setting, as well as a number of activities to promote our school values. Team Time occurs on a weekly basis where students are involved in activities to get to know each other better and develop cooperative and team skills. Kitchen safety sessions commence this week for all students and each class has been allocated a cooking session for the term. In addition, all classes will have a garden session with Mrs Cosgriff.

We thank all parents and guardians who brought their children to school during the first week for assessment purposes. Information gathered before students begin is invaluable when developing learning programs.  If you haven’t returned the forms issued at this time, please return them to the school office as soon as possible.

Home work has commenced this week with students receiving their first Mathsmate for the year. We also ask that parents support their students to complete at least one Reading Journal entry. In addition, students are expected to finish any work not completed in class time. Homework is to be handed in on Friday and a new Mathsmate will be distributed. A ‘Homework Investigation’ task will be gradually phased in over the next few weeks as well.

Room 14 students have been designated recycle bin collectors for the term and Room 12 will be manning the sport shed during break times. All classrooms have been allocated a small area of the school to maintain, nurture and care for.

We will be using the iPads regularly during lessons and we kindly ask that students bring a set of clearly labelled headphones to school. A new application: Showbie, will be introduced in the coming weeks to enable students to complete tasks, develop portfolios and submit work. This app will enable teachers to set tasks and communicate with parents among other things. Showbie will supersede See Saw in the Senior School.

Kind regards,

Mrs Hay, Miss Allen, Emily and Miss Johnstone
