Year 2 Mathematics Workshop

On Thursday 8 November at Killara High School, the Mathematics department hosted a Mathematics program for Year 2 students about fractals. Mrs Nath, Mr Yeo and Ms Wong developed this program for the students of Roseville, Lindfield, Beaumont Road and Gordon East Public Schools.

Six Year 10 students' Amy Whalland, Amelia Thorne, Yoanna Kim, George Lennon, Edward Tulip and Rana Alva assissted. The students discussed fractals and how they differ from the shapes that we observe in nature. They watched a brief clip from the movie Guardians of the Galaxy which predominantly used fractal mathematics to design the landscapes and exquisite palaces.

The Year 2 students participated in two different activities involving simple and complex shapes. During the first activity students made their own fractal patterns by constructing Sierpinski triangles which were later combined to create a larger scale design. In the second activity, the students assembled fractal tetrahedrons using toothpicks and marshmallows. Students enthusiastically worked beyond the scope of this activity to collaboratively assemble multiple tetrahedrons and create larger structures. The students were proud of the structures and designs they created and were excited to take them home.

Thank you to the teachers, participants and student volunteers for making this day a great success.

Girls in Mathematics Workshop

On 19 November at Killara High School, the Mathematics department hosted an enrichment program for Year 5 girls from Roseville Public School. The students learned about a new Mathematics topic which explored the theory behind networks and connections.

They started by experimenting with what shapes they could make without breaking pipe cleaners or tearing through Play Doh. They attempted to solve the Königsberg bridge problem, developed theories, drew new networks and tested their hypothesis. The students then explored friendship networks, made activity charts and activity tables and learnt the real-world applications of networking.

Thank you to Mrs Nath and Ms Wong in the Maths department, and the Year 10 helpers Avril Alam, Jasmine Kim, Amy Whalland and Jordan Whalland.

3D Printing and Graphics Workshop

On 14 November, Year 3 students from Roseville, Lindfield East, Gordon East and Killara Public Schools came to Killara High School to learn about 3D printing and graphic design. The day began with the primary school children designing anything to their heart’s desire, such as colourful Christmas ornaments, creative name-tags, spooky skeletons or wacky shapes and concoctions. Their creations were placed in the queue to be printed and have been sent to their schools.

Later the students had their picture taken in school groups and 3D printed. After a recess break they started on green screening. The students chose different backgrounds like space, forests and images from other worlds. The Year 3 students posed in different ways and edited themselves within the backgrounds. The day was a blast for all the children with help from Mr Telfer and the student helpers from Killara High School: Liam Lynch, Ali Sheng, David Cooper and Jade Murray.

Video Conference

On Monday 5 November, the Social Justice Committee took part in a major video conference with four other schools.

Killara High School teacher Mrs Dixon chaired the conference where senior students from the four local primary schools asked questions directed at the SJC about what they can do to be prepared and organised for and at high school and how to make authentic friends.

Some of the questions that the students asked us included:

How to make friends,

What is a timetable, and

How to stay organised and prepare for assessments.

The other schools involved in the video conference were Lindfield, Lindfield East, Killara and Beaumont Road Public Schools.

Thank you to all the organising teachers from the KSP for providing this leadership opportunity to all the students participating.
