Year 1 & 2 Learning Detective of the week: Eli for striving to be the best learner he can be.
Year 3 & 4: Lilymae for persevering through all activities at camp.
Reading Awards
Students have been reading a lot, which is fabulous. I hope everyone organises some books to continue their reading during the holidays. The following students received certificates at assembly this week:
50 nights: Sam.
75 nights: Sophie, Ryan, Eli and Chace.
100 nights: Ashton, Oliver L, Renee, Eve, Molly, Campbell, Noah and Cody.
And our first student to make the 125 nights target is Lacey. Super stuff Lacey!
Campaspe Downs Camp
It was wonderful to arrive at the camp on Friday and be greeted by smiling students, who were ever so keen to tell me all about the great time they had been having. Then to have the staff at the camp say to me that the students had been excellent and the best group they have had, it was fabulous! A big well done to the students for being such wonderful ambassadors for the College. A big thanks goes to Miss D and Miss O’Callaghan for accompanying the students on the camp. Without willing staff, students wouldn’t gain these brilliant experiences. Below are a few recounts written by the students.
4/5/6 Campaspe Downs by Tamsyn McGurk
On Wednesday the 4/5/6 students jumped on a bus and drove down to Campaspe Downs in Kyneton which took 2 and a bit hours. We ended up getting there at 11:15am. Our first activity was the Centipede, so basically the Centipede was 4 pieces of wood with climbing steps and metal rods on it and we had a try to climb to the top while it was swaying in the wind. The 6 people who made it to the top were Xav, Oli, Sam, Rhys, Noah and Shalmain.
Our next activity was Bushcraft in which we had to make a shelter that protected us from the wind, rain and sun while using knots that we had been taught earlier that session. My group was Anna, Shalmian and myself, but the worst part was when Shalmain dropped a 15kg rock on my foot.
The next day was Thursday, we did the Low Rope Course which was fun because we had to climb and balance on ropes that were 60cm - 1m off the ground. Next we had Raft building which was extremely fun because I slipped and fell in the water. We had to split ourselves into 2 groups which ended up being girls and boys but I had to go with the boys to make the numbers even which was fine. Our group was pretty confident to go across the current but Rhys and I were a bit hesitant so we just went to a tree that was 150m away. I had to get out and get a leaf and that's when I fell in. Next was the Possum Glider which was where we had to get harnessed in and then attached to a ropes and clip, then the team pulled you up while you ran forward or on an angle and then you went up in the air trying to throw bean bags in a bucket while swinging or going around in circles. Then the last activity for the day was orienteering in which we had to go around the whole lake and find locations with a map. My team came 2nd.
Next day Friday was the best day because we had Laser Tag and the Flying Fox. Laser Tag was where we had to wear a headband and gun. We played a 5 minute game and also played a box game which was where you had 3 minutes to shoot a box for as long as you could. I was 2nd best for shooting because I got 70 killed. Then we had Flying fox which went over a dam and was about 500m. We had to walk around the dam and then up to the platform and then get strapped in and off we went. Then we headed home to Charlton. The food was amazing!!!!!!
Flying Fox by Anna
At camp on Friday my favourite thing we did was the flying fox. We did it before lunch after laser-tag. Our instructors were Jordan and Abby. First we went and put on our harnesses. After that we went over to the flying fox. Abby showed us how to clip & unclip the trolley (that was what attached us to the flying fox). Then Jordan went up and gave a demonstration. It looked really cool. About 3 or 4 people went at a time. When the people who had just gone were done they unclipped the trolley from the wire and clipped it onto the next person. Everyone got 2 goes and even Mrs.Fitz had a turn! When it was my first go I went with Marley & Marlly. It went over the lake and it was really high up. It went SUPER fast! Then on my second go I went with Marley, Marlly and Lacey. When the last people had gone we unclipped and walked over to the grassy area to take off our harnesses. The flying fox was amazing! I would definitely go again.
Campaspe Downs Camp 2023 by Sam
The Campaspe Downs camp cabins were very luxurious. I was in a cabin with all the boys. In the cabins there were bunk beds and Tom F, Tom J, Noah, Matthew and I were on the top bunks and everyone else was on the bottom bunks. The 5 and 6 boys made a crib AKA- The Camo Campaspe base.
The food there was amazing. On the first day our lunch was chicken burgers and dinner was Tacos. The second day our breakfast was scrambled eggs and baked beans. It was delicious. Our dinner was Pasta. It was really good. On Friday our breakfast was PANCAKE with maple syrup.
On Friday we had a Laser Tag. It was awesome. The guns had scopes with little red dots so you had good aim. We had a red or blue headband with little black balls on either side of the head that the other team had to shoot and also a little sensor on the gun. The games went for 5 minutes. One of the games we did was where you had to shoot a box with a sensor. The teams had to shoot the sensor and be in control for as long as they could. We had 3 teams and 2 were playing while the other team had a rest.
I was lucky enough to be able to join the Year 5 & 6 class for their final Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden session this week. The students certainly have learnt some great skills, are willing to try and enjoy the flavour of new foods. This week we had Chicken Curry and Pear Crumble. We are looking for volunteers to assist with the Year 3 & 4 sessions next term. See the SAKG section of the bulletin for more information.
Around the Classrooms
This week has been very cold. With that brings some new experiences.
On Monday we had hail and then when we arrived Tuesday there was ice on the ground due to the frost.

"The Best Part of Me" - Year 1 & 2
Delilah: The best part of me is my eyes. They let me see everything.
Harrison: The best part of me is my head because it holds my brain.
Nate: The best part of me is my nose. It helps me to breathe.
Spud Games
On Monday a very exciting event took place! Years 4 to 6 Numeracy group ‘Spuds’ took part in the Spud Games. Prior to partaking they all needed to recite the oath and pledge to compete in good spirit of sportsmanship. Each spud competed in the Pentathlon. The first of the events was the “Great Loud Spud Drum Hit”, where the spuds dropped onto a drum and the sound level was measured. Event two was the “Rollie Rampa-Rama”. This event tested the spud’s ability to bump. The distance the bumped object rolled was recorded. Some spuds were known to roll further than the object on the day! The “Bumpy Rolla-Rama” event saw the spuds roll down a bumpy track. A few injuries occurred in this event, with many losing skin. Event four was the “Great Spud Drop-a-thon”. This event tested the spuds diving abilities, requiring them to dive down a pipe into the water. The final event was the “Great Flying Spuds”. The high jumping ability of the spuds was tested here. They were catapulted into the air, some reaching great heights. Again, injury was common, many cuts and abrasions came out of this event.
All results were recorded and the data will now be analysed in class to determine the range of results, the median, the mean and some graphs to determine if certain features led to spuds outperforming others.

A big thank you to all the staff who have worked in the Primary area this term. We are so lucky to have such committed and caring staff who provide our students with rich and engaging education. Stay warm and enjoy the holidays everyone.
