Grade 6 MasterChef

Our very clever Grade 6's have all competed in the 2023 Surfside MasterChef!

We have been wowed by their creations.  Our theme this year was Australian indigenous ingredients and our Shared Table held a banquet of Carrot and Salt Bush Muffins, Anise Myrtle Damper, Torres Straight Island Scones, Warrigal Greens Risotto, Sage and Salt Bush Gnocchi, Spring Onion Pancakes, Lemon Myrtle Butter and many more. I don't know how the judges decided on the winner.

Well done to groups Kitchen Chaos, Ratatouille and The Ugly Squash.

The Grade 6's come to the end of their school kitchen and garden experience and we have seen them absolutely blossom. Not only have they built an amazing set of culinary skills, they have also developed leadership skills, team work, problem solving, initiative and a whole lot of passion, all skills that they will no doubt take beyond the kitchen and garden.

We are so proud of our Grade 6's and wish them all the best in their cooking and gardening endeavours and wherever else life takes them.

Fresh Food Fair Preparation

Planning for the FFF is underway and we are putting a call out for resources.

Jars: Can you please start saving your fancy jam jars for our preserves? It would be super helpful if you could remove the label too :)

Pots: Decorative pots for our garden superstars to plant up for our stall

Decorative Rocks: to decorate the tops of the pots after students have planted.

If you clearing out the garden shed or you notice something in a neighbor's hard rubbish then we would love it!

Food Scrap Friday

NEW DROP OFF POINT FOR BUCKETS COMMENCING TERM 3!

Commencing in term 3- Friday 14th July, can all families please bring their compost buckets directly to PETE'S GATE, at the garden. Our brilliant Food Waste Warriors will meet you there and swap over your bucket. You can then go for a wonder through The Patch and see how we are using your scraps and turning them into gold plated soil for our veggies.

We hope this will make it easier for all families, especially those who drop off their children at the back on the school.

Food scrap Friday is an amazing initiative that was started up a few years ago by the Guise family. It is going strong and last year we saved a record amount of food scraps from making its way to landfill to pollute our environment.

If you are interested in joining in on our war against food waste, come along at 8.30am tomorrow morning and meet our fabulous team of food waste warriors. They will give you a bucket and let you know what can and cant go in it.

If you have a full bucket, bring it along!

If you have a spare bucket please return so we can continue to circulate them throughout our school community.

CHICKEN AND GARDEN HOLIDAY HELPERS

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1c8aqmlclYcgX41us3DIS1pjzye4mkNaKVVlVAb4-WpI/edit?usp=sharing

If you are free to come and help out over the term break to check in on the chookies and water the seedlings in the hothouse, then please click the above link and sign up. Our feathered friends will need to have their water changed over, fed and eggs collected daily.

And the best part is you can take the eggs home to make some fabulous pancakes or eggs on toast. The students hard work of planting seeds will also need to be watered. These are in the hot house.

We will send you all the information you need to get the job done so dont worry if you haven't done it before. It is super easy and fun! The kids love it :)

Botanical Illustration Sessions

This term in the garden we looked at the world of botanical illustrations. We have a few budding artists at our school and could be great scientific artists!

Fabulous Produce

Some of the fabulous food our students are growing!

CREATIVE CATS AND CREW

Our fabulous Creative Cats and Creative Crew have had a couple of fun weeks making dream catchers and writing letters of gratitude with leaf rubbing art.

Volunteers

We are still looking for volunteers for our Term 3 program in our Kitchen and Garden classes.  Check out our timetable when it comes out on Compass.  We are so appreciative of any help.  Alternatively if you decide on the day you can make it, the more the merrier, we would love to have you (just make sure you have completed the following below and you can read some documents prior to starting).

Kitchen – Fleur.Kilpatrick@education.vic.gov.au

Garden – Clancey.McKenzie2@education.vic.gov.au

There a few things that need to be ticked off before volunteering:

Read a few documents that we will email you to ensure the upmost safety of our students.

And then you’re ready to go!

If you are unable to make the classes this term due to other commitments and still want to be a part of our program we would absolutely love some help gardening.  It’s a big garden!  You don’t need to be a gardener to help out, there are many jobs and so much to learn for everyone.  Clancey will be in the garden Tuesday from 1pm and all day Wednesday and Thursday.  She would really appreciate some gardeners to accompany her on these days.  You are also very welcome to pop in any other day to do a spot of gardening to help manage our patch, even if it’s just 15 minutes around school drop off and pick up, every little bit helps.

Lastly, we are looking for some volunteers to go on a watering roster (20 mins) at every school drop off.

Please email Clancey (above) if you are able to help out in the garden in any way, she will be eager to answer you email.

We are so grateful for all the assistance and enthusiasm that is given to this amazing program for our students.  Thank you.

Kind Regards,

Fleur and Clancey
