Refugee Week

Students and staff put their best poker faces to the test this week, joining in the gym for a game of ‘hunt the ring or ‘mheibes’ as it’s traditionally known. A common game played in Iraq, hunt the ring involves two teams each taking turns to hide the ring while the opposing group uses clues through body language and expressions to guess the ring keeper. This and other multicultural games have been hosted by our Multicultural Liaison Officers at recess and lunch this week, as part of GSSC’s early celebration of Refugee Week.

This year’s theme ‘Finding Freedom,’ aims to highlight aspects of the refugee experience and help the broader community to understand what it is like to be a refugee. The national celebration also works to unite individuals, communities and organisations from many different backgrounds behind a common cause and as a reminder, that regardless of our differences, we all share a common humanity.

Due to the school holidays and our celebration next week of NAIDOC Week, some additional Refugee Week activities will be held at the start of next term. This will include a screening of our ‘The Way to Freedom’ film so keep an eye out on our facebook and in future newsletter for updates!
