From the

Leadership Team

That’s a wrap! A short nine-week term quickly came and is nearly over as Greater Shepparton Secondary College continues to provide many opportunities for our students to enhance their learning, showcase their talents and, for the Year 11s, experience real exam conditions.

The final weeks of the term have also brought an end to our sunny autumn days, changing them to the recent cool and wet days which signalled the onset of winter.

Parents and care-givers are reminded that students have several options for winter uniform, including a woollen jumper a grey wind-proof jacket and a GSSC beanie and scarf. Layering up is one way to beat the cold of the outside environment and long-sleeved black or white t-shirts can be worn under the school uniform for extra warmth. Hoodies are not permitted to be worn, either on top or underneath uniform

Wearing correct school uniform is one of the ways students can show pride in our school and we encourage parents and carers to support us by checking your child’s uniform. If they have outgrown last years winter uniform and you are needing assistance to purchase new pieces, then please contact our Wellbeing staff.

Term 2 is always a busy one and in the previous edition of our newsletter the continued Multicultural Awareness education was highlighted with our inaugural Africa Week.

Since then we have recognised Refugee Week and the term will conclude with week 9 NAIDOC celebrations, including a special assembly for our Year 12s and First Nation students.

Students in Years 9 and 10 have experienced ‘subject tasters’ so that when they are choosing electives they are doing so with some prior knowledge. Domain Leaders have organised for staff to share the main focus of the unit and also provide samples of the products produced. Well done to the organisers of this event. Year 7 and 8 students will have the opportunity to do the same next week.

Showcasing the talent of our music students has continued, a highlight was the Debut Concert held by all our newest Year 7 musicians. Saxophones, trumpets, drums, flutes and more were played to an audience of appreciative and proud parents. The future of our school band is looking very bright.

On Thursday our Year 12 students and fast-tracking Year 11s undertook the General Assessment Task (known as the GAT). This was run in morning and afternoon sessions and totalled 3.5 hours under exam conditions in the gymnasium. The GAT is a subsidiary exam utilised by the Department to generate a score when students are unable to sit the end of year exam.

This section of the newsletter generally focusses on what the students have been up to, but this fortnight I’d like to share what staff do to build connections between each other and foster positive relationships.

Last Monday, Foods Teacher, Anna Corazza, facilitated an evening inviting staff to come along and learn how to prepare a chicken, pumpkin and spinach risotto. A great evening of chatter and cooking was enjoyed by those in attendance. Thanks Anna!

On Thursday evening, GSSC hosted a Parenting Seminar titled Raising Resilient Children. This event took place in the Community Hub from 5:30pm. Parents and carers who attended enjoyed the experts sharing their knowledge and tips. These programs are one way that you can become better connected to your school and we welcome attendance.

Best wishes to our second Presentation Ball debutantes and their partners, who will hit the dance floor, all glammed-up, on Friday 16th June at the GV Hotel.

The last day of term is next Friday 23 June and students will be dismissed at 2.10pm.  Student Semester One reports will be available on Compass from 4pm.

Enjoy whatever the two week school holiday break brings you and your family. If you have a young person in Year 12, or a fast-tracking Year 11, then it's bound to be study, study and more study!

Stay safe and healthy, we look forward to seeing students back at school on Monday 10th July.
