Year 3

The year 3 team love to spill the tea on what's going on in our cohort, read below to find out the juicy information of what our glorious students are doing at school.

Maths:

We have continued to investigate fractions of collections, mixed and improper fractions as well as starting to explore equivalent fractions. Our confidence with fractions has improved significantly as we have developed our understanding, fluency, problem solving and reasoning.

We have also been looking at 2D and 3D shapes and the properties of each shape. At home, ask your child to name different shapes and how many vertices, sides, edges, faces etc that shape has.

Reading:

The students have been working hard in Reading, looking at Graeme Base as a writer. They have explored the various puzzles carefully placed throughout his books and even tried to solve them, looked at how he includes detailed illustrations that tell a story without needing words to explain what is happening and the various types of writing craft he adds throughout including our favourite, alliteration.

Writing:

In writing so far students have begun creating their own picture story books. Students are following the writing process of planning, drafting, revising, editing and publishing. They have been inspired to use Graeme Base’s craft such as powerful verbs, illustrations, puzzles and more in their stories. Check out some amazing front covers – can you make a prediction of what the story might be about?

We are proud of all our students' efforts, positive mindsets and look forward to acknowledging and celebrating their accomplishments with them throughout these units.

Year 4

The Year 4’s have been working hard this term; investigating life-cycles of different animals, analysing Margaret Wild as an author and even beginning to plan for building a balloon powered car!

In Literacy, students have planned for, storyboarded, drafted and now begun publishing their very own picture story books. They have thought about the purpose of their books, planning their story around a message or common theme. They have gained inspiration through our Author Study unit, focusing on the author’s craft.

They will begin to move into non-fiction texts in both Reading and Writing, with the goal of writing an information report about a topic of their choice, including text structure and features of a non-fiction text.

In Maths, students have been focusing on finding equivalent fractions, using a variety of strategies; fraction strips, number lines and Cuisenaire rods. They have also been exploring how to convert between improper fractions and mixed numbers, using models. They will begin to investigate the relationship between fractions and decimals in the coming weeks.

Students have been enjoying the Humanities unit, as they have been conducting mini experiments, focusing on forces and functions. They have researched how these forces can change if the controlled object is altered in some way. They will use their knowledge of forces and functions to plan for, build, test and remodel a balloon powered car.

In Science, students have begun to discover that living things have different life cycles, however are dependant of one another for survival. They will dive deeper into this connection through our excursion to the Ballarat Wildlife Park, on Thursday 31st August.

Year 6

What a term so far in Grade 6- it has absolutely flown.

In Reading, we have been looking at the Morris Gleitzman’s historical narrative Once. While reading we have been recording our thinking as think tracks and we have been writing chapter summaries  and our predictions for the following chapter.

In Writing, we have been following the process of writing to develop a well-crafted historical fiction text. We have used elements of Morris Gleitzman’s writing style in our own historical narratives which we are in the process of wrapping up. Check out some excerpts from our writing below.

In Maths, we have been looking at percentage off amounts like we see in the community as discounts. We have also been investigating the relationship between perimeter and area in real world contexts such as blocks of land.

In Health, we are focusing on the healthy eating habits. We have investigated the role that sugars take in our diet and the impact that they can have on our bodies. It was interesting to find that glucose, fructose, sucrose and lactose are all types of sugar and are in consumable products and we don’t even realise it. We have also investigated the nutritional labels found on all food packaging to identify ‘healthy’ and ‘unhealthy’ foods.

We are looking forward to our second lot of Interschool Sports kicking off in Week 7- volleyball, basketball, cricket, tennis and softball. Wish us luck!
